_Our Family Tree: An Evolution Story_ by Lisa Westberg Peters would be a good starting place for the 8-year-old but too childish for the 11-year-old.
Also good: _Life on Earth: The Story of Evolution_ by Steve Jenkins, _The Tree Of Life: The Wonders Of Evolution_ by Ellen Jackson, and _Darwin and Evolution for Kids: His Life and Ideas with 21 Activities_ by Kristan Lawson.
