A theory is an idea that is undergoing testing to try and prove its validity while a scientific theory is something that while not proven beyond all doubt is accepted enough to be used as a general rule in scientific thought, but if new evidence arises to disprove the theory it will either be adapted or discarded just the same as a regular theory.

Here is the difference from a creationist regarding theory and scientific theory.
A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing. A theory is valid as long as there is no evidence to dispute it. Therefore, theories can be disproven.
A theory is a belief or principle that guides action or assists comprehension or judgment

a theory is a thought , a little ligth bulb that goes on and off.
a scientific theory is also a theory but one that can not go on and off, it stays on. so the difference is that a scientific theory radiates light in all directions to those who are aware of the ultimate truth whereas a theory is like a lighthouse a beacon that can bring you to a save harbour but also direct you on the rocks. my 2 cts.

Most will show their ignorance like brian8907. They have no idea that scientific theory has to be supported by proven data, i.e. indisputable fact.

a scientific theory is based on observation and experimentation and is refutable, see karl poper.
meanwhile all theories or beliefs that cannot be proven false or wrong stand equal in value.

I think that they define a theory as being something that someone WANTS to think true, rather than something based on factual evidence.
BUt what do you expect of people who cling to delusional thoughts?

You can call it whatever you like, but it's still not going to magically become a fact until some proof turns up.
