Depends on the cat (his metabolism, activity level, etc.), whether he gets dry food in addition to canned food, and the size of the can! However, I doubt that most cats would need much more than one can of food a day. There should be feeding guidelines on the can to give you an idea, and if you notice that your cat is underweight or overweight when you follow the guidelines, you can always adjust the amount of food you're giving him or talk to your vet to make sure you are feeding him correctly and that he doesn't have any medical problems.
My parents used to give their cats canned food twice a day, and they had dry food sitting out all day for them to eat whenever they wanted. Originally each cat got 1/4 can of food twice a day. One cat stayed slender his whole life; the other was overweight her whole life! Eventually we cut back to 1/8 can twice a day for the overweight cat, just to give her a little treat, but that didn't really help.
The cats I have right now only eat dry food, they are both young and at a healthy weight so we leave the food out all day...

Depends on the cat, and the cans youre feeding with, but the smallers round cans, usually about 2 per day. It has a recommendation on the can. However, my 5 year old cat eats about 1 can along with dry food.
Test it out and see, put put about half a can, and then some dry food in another bowl in the morning. And then around dinner time see how much food is gone. It all of it is, you can try feeding a little more. Depends on your cat.

It really depends on the brand and the cat. You can start with the feeding guidelines on the can, and adjust according to your cat's weight and preferences. I feed Nature's Variety Instincts (venison) and both cats get 1 can per day (6oz). Poppy would happily eat more but I have to keep an eye on her weight. The general rule of thumb is that active cats can eat 20-30 calories per day per pound. So if you have an 8 pound cat, he could eat up to 240 calories per day. If you have a 15 pound cat who should weigh 8 pounds, the same is true, although you'd probably go with fewer calories. How do you know how many calories are in a given can of food since they don't list it? You can contact the mfr, but you shouldn't take their response as gospel. It'll just be a ballpark figure. Or see the link below - it has values for many brands of canned foods.

At the vet hospital where I work, we calculate 1/2 of a 5 1/2 ounce (tuna size) can of cat food a day, divided into a morning feeding and an evening feeding.
If the cat seems hungry, we sometimes put 1/2 cup of dry food in its dish to gnosh on in between meals.

depending on the size of not only the cat; but also the cat food can;
normally one can of regular sized cat food a day ( half inthe morning, half at night) this can be mixed with some dry food if your cat is still looking at you like you're 'starving' it =]
if you're using.. say Fancyfeast cat food ( a smaller canned variety) I normally feed one of those per meal time.
anymore than that.. is normally too much for a cat.
but I'm no professional.. talk to your vet about how much the recommended feeding is =]
good luck!

Feeding instructions or guidelines are included on most every bag and most cans of pet foods. These guidelines give the recommended amount to be fed based on growth level and weight.
What size is the can? 3 oz. 5 oz.?
Every animal has a different level of activity, metabolism, and ambient environmental temperature. In addition, breed, age, and other environmental stresses all impact daily requirements. These guidelines are rough starting points. If your animal is thin or hungry, feed it more often and in greater quantity. If your pet is obese, feed it less.
