How much more power does a .22 mag have than a .22lr?

they both use a .22 cal bullet. but if you compare a .22LR to a .22 mag the cartridge is larger (about twice the size) which means it has more powder resulting in faster speeds and more energy. they are both rim fires, which means neither is good for killing anything farther than 90-100 yards. the magnum is better for killing varmints, like groundhogs. i have shot 3 groundhogs and one skunk with my grandparents Winchester model 94 9422 lever action. i use the 40 grain hollow points they have more energy and expand more than the soft points and are better for quicker shots.

The people who have said there isn't much difference.. don't know what they're talking about. There is a substantial difference in penetration. You can hunt coyote with a 22 mag successfully... and I know people that do. I've tested both the LR and Mag side by side.. and have put a mag thru 1/8th inch steel that the LR only shattered on. When you're using such a small bullet diameter and weight.. velocity matters greatly. A mag is twice the gun a 22 is. On the flip side tho.. the mag bullets are severely overpriced for what you get.. just like the 17 cal is. You'll get 3 times the power out of a 223 for the same price.

Not much. The trajectory is more flat though. It makes for better long range hits. If you want versatility on a budget the 22Lr is the best in my opinion. For long range shoots I have used a more expensive bullet brand called CCI stingers with good luck. Regular shooting, just plain full metal jackets are fine.
