It means that God foreknew our volition and we are hand picked that way. Do not let anyone who is not with God or not one of God's people lead you astray.... Do not be influenced by Satan's followers = anyone who is more concerned with this world than the next.

Little children, let no one deceive you! The one who does what is right is righteous, just as He is righteous. The one who commits sin is of the Devil, for the Devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the Devil’s works. Everyone who has been born of God does not sin, because His seed remains in him; he is not able to sin, because he has been born of God. This is how God’s children—and the Devil’s children—are made evident. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother.
1 John 3:7-10

The believer should not practice sin. The expression "keep on sinning" (3:8) is in the present tense and suggests a continual practice, that is, "habitually sin." "Life" (3:9) may refer to the divine nature of those born of God (1 Pet. 1:3-4) or perhaps to the divine resources inherited through new birth (Jer. 31:31-34). But the specific sin that John warned believers not to practice is described at length in 3:10-4:21. The true believer should consistently practice love for God and his children. The children of the devil will consistently practice hate toward God and his children. In 3:9-12 John clarified what he meant by the antichrists (2:18, 22). They are children of the devil. John picked up the theme of brotherly love (3:10) and developed it. Cain (cf. Gen. 4:8) was set forth as a negative illustration of the concept of brotherly love.

It might help you to look at Young's Literal Translation:

1 John 3:7-10 (Young's Literal Translation)
Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

7 Little children, let no one lead you astray; he who is doing the righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous,

8 he who is doing the sin, of the devil he is, because from the beginning the devil doth sin; for this was the Son of God manifested, that he may break up the works of the devil;

9 every one who hath been begotten of God, sin he doth not, because his seed in him doth remain, and he is not able to sin, because of God he hath been begotten.

10 In this manifest are the children of God, and the children of the devil; every one who is not doing righteousness, is not of God, and he who is not loving his brother,

The reason why I brought it up is because John is actually remaining true to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He states that we are in Christ, and we are no longer counted as sinners while we remain in Jesus. Jesus provided the covering that made this possible. So those who are in Christ by faith have their sins blotted out in God's eyes.

There are other factors having to do with this. Verse 7 refers to the heresies that mark John's ministry to those he cared for, especially in Asia Minor. He was having to deal with false doctrines that would appear in those places where he preached. So he said, " Let no one lead you astray", and that there was one righteousness offered by God, and that is obtained through Jesus Christ.

verse 8 shows the change in those who believe as they are disrupting the works of Satan, and because Christ dwells within the believer, the believe is counted as righteous (vs. 9).
Compare that to John 3 and the references to being "Born Again".

Verse 10 is only a part of the statement John made, in that God draws a line between those who are saved and those who are not are evidenced by those who practice, or do not practice what Jesus commanded: Love one another.

"7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous."

Makes sense....

"8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work."

From the beginning? According to the OT, "the devil" was once the greatest of the angels.

"9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God."

So one is sinless after being born again? Cool. Too bad that contradicts dozens of other verses in the epistles alone.

"10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother."

So if you screw up at all, no matter what, clearly you were never a "child of God" to begin with and have duly earned the fires of eternal hell. The mercy is astounding.

The Greek Transliteration of this says:

(7) "Sin is the rejecting of Divine Law, In him, that is, in Christ, was no sin. All the sinless weaknesses that were consequences of the fall, he took; that is, all those infirmities of mind or body which subject man to suffering, and expose him to temptation. But our moral infirmities, our proneness to sin, he had not. He that abides in Christ; continues not in the practice of sin."

(8) "Renouncing sin is the great proof of spiritual union with, continuance in, and saving knowledge of the Lord Christ. Beware of self-deceit. He that doeth righteousness is righteous, and to be a follower of Christ, shows an interest by faith in his obedience and sufferings. But a man cannot act like the devil, and at the same time be a disciple of Christ Jesus. Let us not serve or indulge what the Son of God came to destroy. To be born of God is to be inwardly renewed by the power of the Spirit of God. Renewing grace is an abiding principle."

(9) "Religion is not an art, a matter of dexterity and skill, but a new nature. And the regenerate person cannot sin as he did before he was born of God, and as others do who are not born again. There is that light in his mind, which shows him the evil and malignity of sin. There is that bias upon his heart, which disposes him to loathe and hate sin. There is the spiritual principle that opposes sinful acts. And there is repentance for sin, if committed. It goes against him to sin with forethought."

(10) "The children of God and the children of the devil have their distinct characters. The seed of the serpent are known by neglect of religion, and by their hating real Christians. He only is righteous before God, as a justified believer, who is taught and disposed to righteousness by the Holy Spirit. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. May all professors of the gospel lay these truths to heart, and try themselves by them."

In other words, those who truly belong to G-d and are in the Family of Jesus the Christ; do not willingly give in to sin. It is always there as a temptation, but those who live by the Divine Law do all in their power to avoid letting that temptation; become an action.

1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
1Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
1Jn 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
1Jn 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

"whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother."

It literally means that salvation is not on our terms, but on God's. It means that we cannot do whatever we wish, and truthfully claim to be of God.

Well, John reemphasizes the message of freedom from sin by contrasting God and the devil, the people of God and the people of the devil. God is righteous and by His grace His people may also be righteous. The conclusion he cannot sin. It is inconceivable for the person born of God to live a life of sin. If he does, he is denying what God did when He saved him. Sin is incompatible with Christ's new nature given to the Christian.

If you read John 5-15 you will understand..use context clues.

It is saying that when Christians testify of their belief in Jesus and the things they have felt and seen, non-believers do not believe.

In this passage Jesus is talking about the wind and the person says he does not know what Jesus is talking about. Jesus goes on to say basically "We talk to you of worthy things and you do not believe, so why would you believe when we talk about Heavenly things?"

I guess it means that if we're reborn in Christ, we won't want to sin.
