try laying flat on your back and put a book on your stomach. watch it as you inhale and exhale. the book should go up and down and your chest should not move at all. I used to lay like this when watching tv or a movie just so i could practice.

good luck

Its true!! breathing from you diaphram does help you to become a better singer. When it comes to something like this, I just have to concentrate on using my diaphram because if you use only your head voice you could really hurt your voice. So when practicing your singing make sure you have good posture Stand up straight don't slouch and just for a few minutes practice breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth and before you start singing warm up your voice by doing some voice exercises on the piano which would be a good time to practice using your diaphram. Once you have your own routine down using you diaphram will become a lot easier.

As an exercise, try taking a deep breath that fills your stomach and then your chest. then start waay down low and gradually get higher (you'll sound like a siren) while only releasing a little bit of air at a time. Try to keep a constant sound as your air runs out. This should help with your support issue. It helped me.

Actually, chefgrille was wrong...do that, but your hand SHOULD go up and down while you breath if you're doing it correctly. Anyway, if you lay down flat on your back, you can't really help but breath from your diaphragm. Try to copy that.

Linz and booda are right, but it's also important to stand up straight and keep your chest fully expanded at all times. All of the motion should be in your diaphragm, not your chest or shoulders.

practice breathing while lying on the floor.

your stomach should rise and fall and your shoulders should remain motionless if you breathe naturally while lying on hard flooring.

Good Luck!

When you sing, stand up straight and put one hand on your diaphragm. Your hand should not go outward while you sing.
