The word ghost is from the Old German word geist, which means a spirit. The word has generally come to be understood as referring to a disembodied human spirit. There are many different kinds of spirit beings. God is a spirit. Angels, both holy and fallen are spirits. Human beings are spirits that dwell in human bodies until released through death. Demons are a class of spirits of unknown origin (some believe they are fallen angels, but I believe they are a different class, as fallen angels can fly whereas demons appear to be earthbound.)
The belief that supernatural manifestations are the work of disembodied human spirits is common belief, but it is not Biblical. The more likely culprits are demon spirits, which are always portrayed in the Bible as evil, although portrayed in various cultures as either good or evil. Angels are either holy servants of God or rebellious fallen angels under the domination of Satan, or the Devil (which is always a proper name, and a mistranslation of the word "demon" in many passages of the King James Bible.)
I believe humans spirits when released from the body gravitate to the place of their attraction. If they are holy, God-loving beings, they are drawn to heaven, If they a hateful and wicked they go to their own kind to the place we commonly refer to as hell, but is more accurately referred to as Sheol or Hades, the place of the dead, awaiting the Day of the Final Judgment. I do not believe they linger long on the earth.

I don't know for sure, but maybe a spirit has moved on, but a ghost has remained to haunt the earth. Maybe they are the same thing with different names...

Everybody seems to have their own opinion. Mine is that spirits co-exist with a living body. Ghosts are disembodied spirits.
