I am going to be having a Venetian Masquerade themed wedding. In that time period dessert was usually some sort of pastries pilled high and decorated profusely. I really think it would be a neat idea to do something similar with chocolate éclairs or some other pastry or do you think I should go with the traditional cake?
I will probably be making the cake or pastries myself, so any suggestions on how to organize the pastries or decorate the cake would be helpful as well.

My fiance and I are funding the wedding ourselves. We are straight out of college and will be making the pastries or cake ourselves with the help of my grandmother who has catered many of these events herself.

Tastey good either way. I like the idea of staying with your theme, go for the pastries. I wouldn't do it yourself though, it's too much work on the day of your wedding. You don't want stale pastries.

I think having pastries pilled high would be a wonderful memory for everyone to have of your wedding and would really stand out:)
Although not everyone may relate the pastries to the venetian masquerade if they are not familiar with it:)
It would be a great touch, but I suggest maybe doing a small wedding cake as well;) Something very simple and easy, so both you and the groom can do the traditional "cutting the cake". You won't have to do anything huge, because you will have pastries as well:)

I say "go for it!" My fiance is very traditional and wants a traditional wedding cake, but I'm less traditional and wanted to have tiered doughnuts making a "cake" from our favorite doughnut store in his hometown (which is a very sentimental place to us). We're compromising and having both, although I have conceded to cutting and feeding each other the more traditional cake. Either go with the pastries if you don't think it would be too much work, or scale it down and do both! That way your guests have a choice too.

Would you be willing to do half and half? Do a small cake just for the two of you so you can do the ritual cake cutting.. And have the rest as pastries for the guests. This way those who prefer seeing tradition get it and for you, a new and awesome way to prepare what you want as well ( :

I think that would be really cool...you could even do a variety of pastries if you wanted...I personally love cake, but half the time, wedding cakes don't even taste very good...and it would be within yoru theme to have the pastries....

I think its personally a call. A friend of mine got married a few months ago and did both. They had just an individual cake for them to cut and etc and then two different tables full of different types of pastries and desserts. It was pretty cool. I think you should do what you want. Breaking some traditions is alot of fun!!!!!

i would do both...Do a small cake for the cutting and pictures, but set up pastries on silver platters...these can be rented if u don't have them. As for suggestions, look up Victorian Style Desserts on the net. Also research victorian styles as it pertains to the time period. Wedding cakes didn't become popular until the mid 1850's...so u'll need to be creative. U can use gold leaf and scrolls, edible gold pearls...

You could always just do both. Have a small two-tier wedding cake for you to cut and and then have the pastries for the guests to enjoy.

I love the pastries idea - complete with powdered wigs and mozart playing somewhere on the virginal. cool.
How many guests will determine whether it's worth it for you to make the pastries yourself. Trust me. You'll be up to your ears in allegators the days before your wedding. Do contact a good French pastry shop in your area.
If you're in the Richmond VA area, Jean Jaques on Cary Street is quite good. And I would bet $$ they would ship overnight.

If your making it yourself- go with the cake. We thought of doing the same idea but it was a small fortune for everything.... cakes, mask, decorations... food... We end up finding a cater who supplies everything in one big package for a plain jane wedding.
I think it would be insane to try to make Venetian pasteries yourself and they are $$$$ to buy. I would just decorate the cake in that style and call it a day- that it is going to be hard enough in itself and you can put filling in the cake to give it the same feel and taste.
