Steak is good anytime. Whether it is good to have on a diet is another question.
As you say, depends on which diet fad you prefer today. Losing weight is about using more calories than you take in. A reasonable diet, including a steak now and then, combined with exercise will keep you just fine. Eat a little less and exercise a little more to lose some of those extra pounds. Just don't obsess about it.

Actually, cow meat and pork tends to have the most fat. So it also depends on the kind of diet your on. Calories, carbs, fat, sugar, etc. Usually you should balance it out between vegetables as well. If you eat all the meat you want, it turns out to be the opposite of a "diet", and vegetarians tend to be thinner than those who aren't because of no intake of meat.
And you can eat steak in moderation or a bit more if you excersize because you'll be distributing the meat's protein and not just storing fat. Depends on your situation and what you do with it.

I agree with Crystal. I think the "diet" you are referring to is the Atkins diet, where dieters eat a very high daily percentage of protien (usually found in meats, chicken, pork, etc.) and a very low percentage of carbohydrates. The thought on this is that protein foods fill you up faster and leave you feeling full longer, thereby resulting in less caloric intake per day. It works for some, but isn't considered a healthy diet.

Depends on what your dieting for. Trying to pack on the pounds/muscle... you might eat meat and more meat. Trying to lose weight... need to eat lean meats. Lean turkey, chicken, and beef. I would cut out ham/hotdogs/pork chops/ect.

Meat is a source of protein but you should eat grass fed beef not grain fed.
