Straight to the point:

Joshua 10:30 - "... and they went striking it and every soul that was in it with the edge of the sword."

In other words the people, a soul is the person, not some spirit. Because if it were a spirit, then swords wouldn't be able to strike it.

hope that was clear

In the Bible, “soul” is translated from the Hebrew ne′phesh and the Greek psy·khe′. Bible usage shows the soul to be a person or an animal or the life that a person or an animal enjoys. To many persons, however, “soul” means the immaterial or spirit part of a human being that survives the death of the physical body. Others understand it to be the principle of life. But these latter views are not Bible teachings.

Gen. 2:7: “Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.” (Notice that this does not say that man was given a soul but that he became a soul, a living person.)

1 Cor. 15:45: “It is even so written: ‘The first man Adam became a living soul.’ The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.” (So the Christian Greek Scriptures agree with the Hebrew Scriptures as to what the soul is.)

The scriptures use the word soul to represent a person or their life. The soul and the spirit are two different things according to the following scriptures:

Ecclesiastes 12:7: “Then the dust returns to the earth just as it happened to be and the spirit [or, life-force; Hebrew, ru′ach] itself returns to the true God who gave it.” (Notice that the Hebrew word for spirit is ru′ach; but the word translated soul is ne′phesh. The text does not mean that at death the spirit travels all the way to the personal presence of God; rather, any prospect for the person to live again rests with God. In similar usage, we may say that, if required payments are not made by the buyer of a piece of property, the property “returns” to its owner.)

Ecclesiastes 3:19: “There is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit [Hebrew, ru′ach].” (Thus both mankind and beasts are shown to have the same ru′ach, or spirit. )

Heb. 4:12: “The word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul [Greek, psy·khes′; “life,” NE] and spirit [Greek, pneu′ma·tos], and of joints and their marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Observe that the Greek word for “spirit” is not the same as the word for “soul.”)

soul (american heritage):
1 : The immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life.

soul (merriam webster)
1: The animating and vital principle in humans, credited with the faculties of thought, action, and emotion and often conceived as a non-material entity.

To be as concise and brief as I can, the soul:

1: It's my lifeline to my Lord. It's my spirit which communicates with the Holy Spirit. It's my gift, from God.

The soul, according to many religious and philosophical traditions, is the self-aware essence unique to a particular living being. In these traditions the soul is thought to incorporate the inner essence of each living being, and to be the true basis for sapience. It is believed in many cultures and religions that the soul is the unification of one's sense of identity. Souls are usually (but not always as explained below) considered to be immortal and to exist before their incarnation in flesh.

The concept of the soul has strong links with notions of an afterlife, but opinions may vary wildly, even within a given religion, as to what may happen to the soul after the death of the body. Many within these religions and philosophies see the soul as immaterial, while others consider it to possibly have a material component, and some have even tried to establish the mass (or weight) of the soul.

Spent a semester pondering this question in a philosophy class. Did not end class with an answer. There is not a precise answer, only beliefs on what others think a "soul" is.

All life including plants and animals have a life force which is the soul. Mans soul is an eternal soul
It is possible for an animals soul to go to heaven if it has been loved, because of that love which gives glory to God who is love itself and will be there for His purpose not necessarily for yours
