A troll is a person who posts inflammatory or derogatory messages just to get a rise out of other people.

R&S tends to attract a lot of them.

The term comes from "trolling", as in fishing, where a fisherman simply casts his lines in the water and moves the boat around, hoping something will bite. Internet trolls are "trolling" for responses to insincere posts.

The term stuck because the people it is applied to fit the second definition of "troll" so well.

Wow! Most people (above) imagine a troll is motivated by a need to get a rise out of other people. That implies a knowledge of the troll's motives that all the other yahoo's just don't have. Until now, I always thought a troll was simply a person who held an unpopular opinion -- an atheist among Christians, or a Christian among atheists. Isn't it a not-so-subtle form of prejudice to imagine we know what another person's motives must be, based only on our own feelings? It's clear to me, we use the term "troll" far too easily.

Someone who hides underneath the exterior of being nice but is actually posting to get a rise out of people.

Like a troll living under a bridge that attacks people in the dark.

A troll on this board is usually someone asking questions or answering them, just to upset others.

They usually pose as Christians or Atheists and then ask an insulting question to try and influence the way people believe about either group.

A person who's only reason for asking a question or posting a comment is to insult or even better, start a running battle between differing groups. They tend to ask similar variations on the same theme, until they get banned, bored or die.
