I work on Wall st and live on E 28th. ive been taking the 6 downtown to canal st then switching to the J. My commute is 50 minutes. it takes about 10 minutes to transfer at canal street because theres tons of stairs and walking to get to the J which isn't good when your in a rush. i thought maybe i should try to take the 6 to 14th st and hop on the 5 because the 6 doesnt go down to wall (and i cant catch the 5 at 28th st). if i get off the 6 at 14th st do i stay at the same platform to catch the 5 or do i have to walk to another platform?

Same platform, yep. 6 runs on the local track on one side of the platform while 5 runs on the express track on the other, so you can catch both trains on the same platform at 14th Street.

Good luck.

You don't have to go to another platform. When you get off at Union Square, just walk across the platform. You can also take the 4 train to Wall Street as well as the 5 train and they go express in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

It's the same platform.

FYI: East 18th Street is nowhere near the Lower East Side, where your profile says you live. Also, Harlem isn't "disgusting."

If you're going to try to answer questions about New York City, at least familiarize yourself with the place.

Yea, other posters beat me to it. Union Square is a hub so express will be on the inner tracks (4,5) and local (6) will be on the outter track. Simply get out, walk across and wait. Will be much quicker than transfering to the J.

btw, i envy your commute and the fact you live in Gramercy area
