Old question and just one of the 15 mistakes I counted in the "good book" before I got to page 9.
No kidding, either.

The Bible says that Adam and Eve had other sons and daughters. Scientists agree that, looking at the laws of genealogy, we all came from one human pair. So, whether you believe man was created or evolved, sexual relations must have occured somewhere between a brother and sister or cousins.
Sometime after the Flood, God gave laws to the Isrealites and incest was forbidden. This is because man was so far removed from Edenic perfection that such a relationship could have adverse affects on any children born from it.
Cain would have married his sister, or perhaps a cousin, but this would not have been classed as incest because it would not have caused any ill-effects for their children. It was also necessary to kick-start the human race.
Incidentally, some people read into the Bible that Cain's wife came from the Land of Fugitiveness and assume that other people were created as well as Adam and Eve. However, the Bible merely says that Cain went to the Land of Fugitiveness and while there his wife gave birth to Enoch. It in no way implies that he met her there.
Genesis 4:16 says that Cain "took up residence in the land of Fugitiveness to the east of Eden." Then verse 17 says: "Afterward Cain had intercourse with his wife and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch." It does not say that Cain left for the land of Fugitiveness alone and that he got married after he got there.
If there were multiple creations of humans and only Adam and Eve sinned, then only Adam and Eve would have been punished. The only mention of death in Eden was if God was disobeyed. Had others been created and if they did not sin, then they would still be here on earth.
Acts 17:26 says: "And he made out of one man every nation of men, to dwell upon the entire surface of the earth."
It may also be interesting to note that many cultures around the world, even primitive ones, have stories and legends about the human race coming from one couple who lived in a park or a garden. These cultures also have stories of a global flood brought about by a God because of a moral issue, though a handful of people survived. There are some minor differences but the stories are essentially the same.

Update:
In response to another answer - Genesis 1:26, 27 says: "And God went on to say: “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the domestic animals and all the earth and every moving animal that is moving upon the earth.” And God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them."
Chapter 2 then backtracks a little as verse 4 says: "This is a history of the heavens and the earth in the time of their being created..." Verse 5-7 continues: "Now there was as yet no bush of the field found in the earth and no vegetation of the field was as yet sprouting (this is clearly referring to a previous point in the creative period), because Jehovah God had not made it rain upon the earth and there was no man to cultivate the ground. But a mist would go up from the earth and it watered the entire surface of the ground. And Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul."
Remember, the Bible is not always chronological. The 'male and female' of chapter one, is Adam and Eve of chapter two.
Also see Acts 17:26 mentioned above.

It's just a frickin' story! It's called a "myth" and is designed to impart a truth (the nature of mankind and our relationship with God) in a memorable way, in story form. It's not a scientific paper. People who lived 2000 years ago could understand that; it amazes me that we can't.

God likes incest, if you think about it, after he slaughtered all the men women and children in the world except Noah's household, there must have been some games of happy families going on until the gene pool picked up! And look at Lot, the only 'righteous' man in two cities; got fixed it up for him to shag both his daughters after he killed his wife for him!

I know that they had at least one daughter, unless I read it wrong. Also, the modern-day Bible is the result of thousands of years of translations, interpretations, and misunderstatnding. It is possible that our current Bibles are missing mant subleties and details that were in the original text.

AS I HAVE SAID 400 times.
READ genesis. God created people. Later he created ADAM AND EVE. So your point is made in ignorance. Go read it... your house of cards totters.

i guess that's not important in a story about morality. it's the meaning of the story to our lives now that's important to bible believers.
