I want to buy a used car for up to £1000. I have read that Japanese cars are very reliable. Any views on Hondas, Mazdas, Nissans or Toyotas. And if so what model should I get.

I want a 4 door. Manual. Probably 1.5-1.8L engine. Up to 10 years old. Not an estate.

All of those would be a good choice. I'd recommend Hondas first, based on reliability and styling. Get whatever suits you best.

Where have you been for the past 20 years? Toyota just recently surpass GM as the #1 car manufacturer in the world. Which means Japanese car sales are growing for a reason: good reliable product.

Your specific choice above will depend on the year, mileage, and condition of the car. But over all, Toyotas and Hondas are better in reliability department than Mazdas and Nissans.

Plus Toyotas and Hondas have huge aftermarket support, so finding parts for them at inexpensive price is not a problem. And most of the maintenance on these are fairlly easy to do if you incline to try it yourself.

Good Luck.

They are reliable, but Ford recently beat out Nissan and is on par with Toyota in quality. Ford has also earned the most awards than any car manufacturer in the world.

They are the best. I personally recommend a Honda Civic, but the Toyota Corolla is really good, too. Both are reliable, get good gas mileage, have good safety records for their class, and are affordable.
