The first responder is correct. Not only is Catholicism NOT a cult, but the first Christian religion. Those who now slander Catholics and claim to be "True Christians" are, as another responder said, ignorant of the history and teachings of Catholicism. I suspect they have been taught that it's a cult of statue-worshiping (wrong about that too!) "Papists", and have never bothered to study it. It's sad that people merely lash out at that which they do NOT understand, out of fear, hatred and ignorance (all of which lead to The Dark Side, by the way!)!
As for Mormonism, it's probably regarded as a cult, due to its early break with established Christian hierarchy AND its practice of polygamy, one of the oldest taboos in Western culture. I don't know if they would really qualify as a cult, in the sense of say, the The Manson Family (a version of Scientology), the "Moonies", or the Branch Davidians.
For that matter, not even Druidism or Wicca can be called "cults", by anyone with half a brain and a high school education, no matter HOW much you dislike or disagree with them!

Catholicism is not a cult, nor is considered a cult by anybody but highly ignorant people who don't really know anything about Catholicism. Case in point, the people above who think that Catholics worship idols or Mary (not true) or add things to the Bible (not true) or don't know anything about Jesus (REALLY not true).
The Church of Latter Day Saints is often considered a cult because of it's dubious origins and religious text (Book of Mormon), not to mention the fact that some of its doctrine runs contrary to Christian theology.

i've never heard that Catholicism is considered a cult. However, Mormonism is technically considered a cult.... but that doesn't mean anything bad. A cult is a group that deviates from the teachings of a major religion to focus on one specific idea or text (like the teachings of Joseph Smith).
The idea that a cult has something to do with brain washing and other negative things is something that contemporary media has given us... but that doesn't make it true
Peace and Blessings,
Sakina

The are strictly man invented and strictly controlled by men... In one sense or another, all "denominations" claiming the title Christian are cults... as they all are man invented... But... the mormons are not even close to being Christian... and neither the mormons nor the roman catholics teach The Truth of The Salvation message...
There is only One True Church and only One Way to gain Salvation....
most of the so-called Protestant and Baptist and other independent congregations, which contain those of The True Christian Faith, do share the basics and many of their members are indeed True Christians.
No mormon is a Christian and very very few of the Roman catholic are.
edit note: the Catholics are NOT the first nor have they ever been the only... there have always been True Christians and they have never been under the control of the pope... the Roman cult did not even start untill more than 200 yrs after Christ commissioned The Church... There is only One True Chruch... and the papists aint part of it.

I've never heard Catholicism referred to as a cult. As for Mormonism, people slander what they don't understand or agree with.

Catholicism worships idols, that's why people may think of them as a cult. The bible says not to worship idols. They worship Mary, the Pope and Saints, just to name a few. Also they have to go thru the priest to be able to talk to God...that's crazy. And it makes me upset that people believe in this. When the have NOTHING like they practice in their hands aka the bible. The Bible never says anything about talking to God thur a priest.
Mormonism i have no real clue about, i have learn all I know about them thru South Park.

They are all cults, of course. It is only certain christians that do not realize this, as to them everyone but themselves is in a cult, as you suggest.

They add to or take away from the bible. Jesus died on the cross to save us, no one should add anything to accepting Him as savior, as a requirement to being saved.
