I'm an artist and love to work in Manhattan. However, I got shocked when I was searching to find a nice accommodation there. There is not anything even near to the word "nice accommodation " in Manhattan!
A shoebox in Manhattan is the same price of a big nice 2BR town house in New Jersey. I prefer to get a 2BR TH in New Jersey; but, I am all the time thinking maybe there are some better options as well? and I wanted to ask some people who had the same experience. What is your best idea about it?
Thank you very much
Paris

Yeah, I have a few friends who live in NJ and work in Manhattan. It's definitely a better alternative to paying a crazy amount of money to live in a tiny closet in Manhattan. But Jersey isn't the only option. You can also check out the other boroughs of NYC--Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx. I myself live in Queens and work in Manhattan. The commute isn't that bad (about 45 mins. to work each day) and I have way more space than some friends of mine who are paying twice as much in Manhattan. And some part of Brooklyn and Queens are only 10-20 minutes aways from the city (like Astoria). Also, I hear that Connecticut isn't bad, either. It sounds far away, but the commute is about the same as mine--45 mins.

I have compared prices in Manhattan and Hoboken, NJ. Its all the same price, but may be little newer or nicer in Hoboken for the price. If you live in other towns in NJ then it will be the longer commute. I personally prefer Manhattan because its not worth saving $500-$600 per month to live in NJ. You have to pay that in commute and put up with the rush hour crowd and etc.

Yeah, it is a good idea.!! Traffic is the only problem as far as commuting during rush hr but other than that I would definitely choose a NJ suburb. I live about 1/2 hr outside of the city which is nice because its close enough but you don't have the crazy city life either.

However, townhouses are still going to be pretty pricey in NJ. They will be cheaper in the less desirable communities. Either way its still more affordable than a place in the city! Good luck with your house hunting!!!

Some enjoy the shoebox lifestyle. They tell all of their family and friends that they are living in Manhattan. For them that's what counts. Plus walking around and knowing you live in Manhattan also gives some a rush. Then again, it's not for me. But some enjoy the shoeboxes.
