My 3 year son has figured out how to unbuckle his car seat straps and any other way to strap him in! One time, he got out and my mom-in-law got pulled over, because he was standing up in the back seat looking out the back window. Yes, I know Granny should have seen him, but she is a very careful driver...thus she watches the road. Anyway, does anyone have a suggestion on how to keep him strapped in?

Please don't respond if your suggestion is to spank my son...I don't spank or hit his hand...as he has started to do it back in return....violence begets violence.

I had the same problem with my daughter and I do not think there is a way to do anything with the seat belt except to change him back to the other type of car seats that he can't get out of. I told my daughter that if she unbuckled her car seat that we would get into trouble that the police man would come and put mommy in jail and you don't want mommy to go away. And you could get hurt and mommy don't want you to get hurt. So that's what worked for me you could try and see if it works for you. Good luck!
My friend took her son to the police department and the police explained it to him so there is another option for you

Take him for a ride in the car to go somewhere he likes. If he gets out, go home. Don't yell, just explain that you love him and don't want him hurt. Keep turning back every time he does it, even if it means inconveniencing the adults. When you get home make sure it's not fun. Keep busy and pay him as little attention as possible. Sooner or later he will learn.
The problem with rigging the seat so he cannot get out is that in an emergency you may need to get him out quickly and may not be able to.

Im not sure if this will work - and it may take some trial runs on your part - but how about going to your local auto parts place and buying one of those velcro padded fabric things that you put on your seat belt so your neck wont get chaffed.

Buckle your kid into the seat and then put the velcro padded thing over the buckle so he cant get to the buckle. The velcro pad thing might be a little long, so you might have to cut one end of the pad off so it will fit over the buckle.

Ive put a link on here so you could see what I mean for the 'velcro padded thing'. The one on the link is sheepskin - but I know they make them in simple padded fabric.

Good Luck!!

I agree with the first answer. Pull the car over immediately and get him in trouble like you would if he ran in the road, he needs to understand this is serious. And if he did it again, I think it would warrant a swat. I do not spank my kids except for things like this, and honestly after the first time of a very stern warning that scares them a bit, I never had to spank for it.
