Go to the bank that you have an ATM card with and tell them you want to open a credit card with them as well. Since you are already a member of their bank they should offer you a credit card with a low balance, like $500 or less. They might make you pay like $99 to receive the card, but then if you make your payments on time for so many months they give it back to you with interest made on it. If you dont have a regular bank account with a debit card or savings acount, open one of those up first with a well known bank. When you are there ask them about the credit card. They will either offer you one then or tell you a better time to get one. DONT just go applying for credit cards all over. Every time you apply for a loan, credit card or anything else, that company checks your credit. Which looks bad on your credit report and may make your credit score go down as a result. Also some credit card companies are more difficult to obtain an account with than others. Discover Card is one that is hard, they only approve people with a decent credit score. If you have excellent credit you could buy anything you wish. If you have poor credit, you will struggle to have anything, unless you pay for everything cash. Good luck and play it smart with you credit.

Credit is pretty straightforward.

Folks lend you money, and watch you over a long time to see what your repayment activity is like, how you use your credit, and whether you're ever late in making payments.

With no credit at all, you have to start somewhere. I'd recommend starting with a department store card - Sears, Penny's, Kohl's - something like that. They'll usually start you with a very small credit line - a few hundred dollars.

Once you demonstrate over a year or so how you'll handle credit, the offers for cards will pour in. Choose wisely, and don't spend what you can't afford.

Contact the financial institution where you have your checking and savings accounts. They should be able to offer first time credit cards.
