If religion reduced the crime rate then you'd expect to see a negative correlation between the percentage of theists in a population and that population's crime rate. This is not the case.
Laws obviously don't reduce the crime rate, since crimes are defined as breaches of criminal law. If there were no laws there would be no crimes.

Religion. When you see a law you know it is made by man and man is fallible. When you see religion, the rules are constructed by an infallible being and that in itself makes the rule that much harder to argue with. I believe that there are many downfalls to organized religion, but they all stem from man's interpretation of God. In the end, without religion, there would be no reason to follow law. In the heat of the moment, its hard to think of the jail time you will do, but the eternal damnation you were taught from childhood is something you would base all actions on because even if you l aren't faithfull, there is an inherent guilt that will always be with you as part of your moral code. Besides, why should I do what you say when I saw you break that rule yesterday? You'll never see god break a rule. That's why religion holds more weight than man's law.

Religion provokes a lot of war, it always has. From Day One. Just look at Iraq now. Just look at Israel & the Muslims. Until recently Northern Ireland was a blood bath. The whole reason our country is being flooded with illegal aliens is because of the economic disaster that the religiously controlled governments of Latin America always produce. Forget religion, its cancer.
Sensible laws on the other hand can reduce crime. SENSIBLE laws.

OK, well first objectivity is impossible. Second if there was no law, there would be no crime. Third I don't think law or religion serve to reduce tension, but add too it. I think one of the biggest causes of crime is Poverty, not religion, or governments, just plain old need. Of course there is "white collar" crime, which hurts more people than physical violence does...so add Greed to the list of things that cause crime, but the biggest cause of crime...Rationalization, because most people who commit crimes think they have a good reason or excuse to do so.

Well because of freedom of religion, no one will ever agree on the same things as far as religion is concerned. So we can't use religion to dictate laws (although its done all the time)
I do wish there would be some commonalities among people such as compassion, respect and tolerance of others and our differences. THAT will keep peace and crime down. But unfortunately, we don't have that.

There's hardly a conflict anywhere that religion can't make worse. Law has a better track record.
Religion promotes group thought. Group thought encourages us to bind with those in the group and have enmity to those outside the group. That causes tension. Religion is a particularly rabid form of group thought.

My opin. neither. If you just listen to the news religion is taking a bad rap and the law? WHat law? If we had better laws there would be less crime. Too many hot shot lawyers in this land of ours and most should be exported to Japan or Mexico.

The law works very nicely with Judaism, thank you very much. Too bad that Paul based his new religion on Judaism minus the law.
