The diaphragm which controls the voluntary and involuntary action of the lungs can develop bubbles underneath it. When you inhale, the bubbles can't escape causing a reversal in the direction of the diaphragm thereby causing you to inadvertently draw more air hence the "hiccup". Tobacco use tends to cause liquid to form in the plura(lining of the lungs) therefore bubbles form easier which is why you hiccup when you inhale the smoke.

I use to smoke and this has never happened to me ----- My niece gets the hiccups all the time ---- I have narrowed it down to one thing ------ TOO MUCH CALCIUM ----- Yep, I already know how retarded that sounds and I don't mind --- Eating too much calcium is very common in this country -- It is actually one major cause of osteoporosis (another cause is a vitamin K deficiency) -- The reason for my answer is that too much calcium depletes magnesium ----- Magnesium Deficiency causes cramps, muscle spasms (including hiccups), heart palpitations and so forth ------ You have a magnesium deficiency!!!

Hiccups are just spasms of your diaphragm - like a tic, or a twitch.
They rarely indicate anything, unless they don't go away.
