If you're picturing someone naked/doing a sexual act and you don't try to turn your thoughts, its lust.

If something sexual pops into your mind and you entertain the thought, its lust.

You can also lust for power, money, attention etc, but its a little harder to do. Make sure that you confess your lust before you receive the Eucharist.

Stay holy!

Edit: Getting an erection isn't lust, sheesh, its a body function. You just have to learn to control your thoughts when it happens.

Great question - that is something I struggle with. Jesus said that if a man lusts after a woman, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart...so this is grave matter, and lusting after somebody is therefore a mortal sin.

I have always had a wandering eye...especially in the summer, when women are wearing less! I think you have lusted if you are staring at a woman and really focusing on "those" parts, and certainly if you envision any sexual activity with that person.

I think glancing at a woman, and then turning away is fine...I try to practice the 2-second rule myself. Right after, especially if I looked longer than that or really had a tough time turning away, I might say a short prayer.

Lust is when you go beyond the point of just being attracted to someone. It is when you start fantasizing about that person and entertaining thoughts of an intense, unrestrained sexual desire.

Being attracted to someone is not something you can help, it just happens. However, you can steer your mind away from lustful thoughts, although it may be difficult at times.

God bless...

No dumb comments? Even though it's an AMAZINGLY dumb question? You know you're 'lusting' because you have sexual desire for someone. This is NOT high-level thought here, son. It's kind of basic. Look up 'lust'. If you DON'T know for sure whether or not you're 'lusting', you're probably not. Ok?

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God.

A fleeting thought is a temptation and not a sin. The sin of lust (inappropriate desire) comes when you dwell (deliberate thought) upon certain thoughts.

The opposite of the sin of lust is the virtue of Chastity (purity).

Lust means viewing another person solely as an object of pleasure, rather than as an actual person, created in God's image and likeness. It dehumanizes a human being.

The temptation will come soon or later.
The idea is if you permit that thinking in your head you are made a mental sin.

It can consume your life. You know it is wrong and chose to do it anyway. Lust brings dirty thoughts and sometimes actions to someone's life.
