I have a 4 year old son who knows when he needs to potty but when he sits down on the potty... he cant go. He stands up and then feels the need to go again. But cant go when he sits down. We put a pull up on him and he goes. He can hold it and make it to the potty, but once there he no longer needs to go. And he will sit on the potty for 30 minutes or longer not going but as soon as he stands up he needs to go. So I put a pull up on him so he can go. Is there any way to help him go once he sits on the potty? I have tried offering him candy or telling him we will go somewhere if he goes potty. And he really wants it you can tell but he still cant go in the potty. Please any ideas will be nice.

We have it in the kitchen since its so hard on him to go. We give him books and such. Even put a little table in front of him so he could color.

No we are using a little potty for him. Figured it would be easier when he was in a hurry.

Maybe he's concentrating too hard and it's having a reverse effect. Try a distraction when he's sitting on the potty, like a book that he really likes or a new toy.

My 3 yr old is the same way...he just sits and grunts and tries so hard...but nothing. The minute you put a pull up on....he goes!
Everyone tells me to let him go naked and then the only place he can go is the potty or floor...and when he makes an accident...tell that's a no-no and use the potty....but I work full-time and the weekends are my only shot to get him trained!
I am going to flag your question...maybe I can get some ideas.

If the issue is with Peeing letting him go standing up. My son never sat on the potty to pee...we put fruit loops/cheerios in the potty for "target practice". If the problem is with Pooping make sure there is a step stool under his feet that they rest on. Not sure why it works but thats how I got my son to go :)
*additional info
My son would never use a little potty always wanted the big potty.
Good luck!

If he is on an adult toilet he could be finding it difficult because his feet are dangling and it is hard to relax your anal muscles in that position. It will give you the feeling of falling in - not pleasant. OR some kids do not like the idea of anything they have created being flushed away. Talk to him about where it goes and why.
Here are some ideas:
1) put a stool under his feet for support
2) give him a child's potty
3) get a squishy tushy (a seat that sits on the toilet sit.) It is kid size and makes you feel like you are not falling in. It comes on and off easily and can be found in Target, Wal-Mart, etc.
4) discuss this with a doctor

You can try some little tricks:
1. Run the water in the bathroom
2. GIve him a book to look at so he can relax and get his mond off of the tinkling
3. Leave the room and tell him you'll be back in a couple of minutes to check on him
Te bribing won't work because that assumes that he is controlling this when really, it sounds like something is preventing him from going on the toilet. Once he does it one, he'll realize that he can do it any time!

Since he's a boy, I'd teach him to go standing up. My son learned to when he was 3. He was a little short, so we had him stand on the bathroom scale and lean over with his hands gripping the top of the toilet seat/lid (which was up, of course). This automatically puts him in the right position for a drip-free pee. My friend who has 4 sons taught me that!

We used cheerios in the potty as a target. I know how frustrating it can be! Best of luck to your little guy!

Try letting him poop in his pull-up while he's sitting on the pot a few times, then remove the pull-up! Remember to reward him even with his pull-up on because at least he's on the pot.
That should work...
Good luck!
