Do NOT just have a tape recorder or repeat yourself. Birds are smart and will just look at you like you're an idiot. The best way to get it to talk is to just say the phrase you want (pretty bird, etc) every time you walk by and walk in the room. Say it in the same tone of voice as "hello *bird name*" and soon, the bird will say that phrase every time you come near it. Other tips can be found at http://www.cockatootrainer.com/talking/

sounds like your describing a cockatiel. Even though they are supposed to be a bird that is not known for talking, I've heard of quite a few people that have them, and say they can talk. Some birds pick up words very quickly, amazons, african greys, macaws, mynahs and quakers are usually quick learners. (Although I spend ALOT of time around birds, and I've seen AG's that will only mimic noises, and cockatoo's and eclectus that can talk so clear you'd almost think it was a person!!!) It all depends on how much time and how clear you talk to your bird. Some birds can start to say words as early as three months, provided they are around people and talked to. We teach everyone that comes into our house "step-up", usually within a couple weeks they have it down and are saying to me "step-up" when I walk into the room, so that I know they want to be picked up!! If you start out with just small things like "step-up" "hello" "good-boy" and their names, and say them to them alot in a soothing voice (sometimes our birds like excited voices, it gets them yammering away!!) they will most likley start to pick it up. Be consistant, and then add new words or phrases as they learn. If I have one of my birds with me, I'll tell him what we are doing, like "let's go get a treat", they seem to pick small phrases fast too.

HAHAHA are you serious?!!

Perhaps you should use the Materazzi technique and see what reaction you get. It's worth a try.
