crkt is a good brand.
cold steel, benchmade, buck, gerber, are all good too.
there are a lot of really good makers, and a few really bad ones.(if it's in a fishbowl at a gas station cash register, it's ok for a tackle box.) you get what you pay for.
whatever you get, take care of it and it will serve you well.
get a sharpening stone and learn to use it, it's easier to maintain an edge than to get a new one.
if you want a classic folder, i'd suggest the buck model 110, it's the quintessential lockback knife. and not outrageously priced.
i got my first pocketknife at age 5, my first hatchet at 4.
first sheath knife at 10.
12 is not too young for a knife.

Wow, when I was 12 I had already been carrying around pocket knives for a few years. If you just want an all around knife, a good Swiss knife is nice. If you want to spend more money. you can get a nice pocket knife from Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Try the internet for their site.
If it is for hunting, then you might want to switch gears and just look for a good all around sheath knife.
Nowadays, someone your age might get in trouble having a pocket knife with them. I know this sounds absurd since this was the norm when I was a kid and even women carried them some then. You'll just have to be very careful never to take it to school. Nowadays they would probably put you in prison for it, sad to say.
There's a million choices out there. Have fun picking one out.

I have and use many CRKT brand knives. they hold a great edge and are well built. You are 12 so I would go with a good swiss army knife from victorinox at that age. Even at that age knife ownership is a touchy subject.

I got my first three blade folding knife when I was six, it was a Case. At twelve I got a bone handle case knife (non folding in a leather sheath) also made by Case. Thirty years later I still have both and they still work well.

I think that at the age of 12 you should get a plastic knife.

any of these knives are fine, and with ll bean, they are 100% guranteed. if the blade breaks, send it back and they will give you a new one.
