well here is a list of the top ten dogs:
According to the American Kennel Club, the Labrador Retriever remains the most popular purebred dog in America. The Lab has held this record for the past 16 years, and we here at Pup Life can't complain! We are enamored of our little Daisy girl (and, of course, our Curly Coated Retriever, Scout). The Golden Retriever retained number 2 status but the Yorkshire Terrier quietly assumed the number 3 spot on the list!
The popularity of toys breeds is on the rise. From French Bulldogs to Silky Terriers, keep an eye out for a new breed of (smaller) dog in your neighborhood! Here are the AKC's most recent stats. They are based on 2005 registration records of purebred dogs:
1. Labrador Retriever
2. Golden Retriever
3. Yorshire Terrier
4. German Shepherd Dog
5. Beagle
6. Dachshund
7. Boxer
8. Poodle
9. Shih Tzu
10. Miniature Schnauzer

Everyone has their preferences. Some like rowdy, crazy, playful dogs, while others prefer a more subdued, quiet dog. If you prefer a high energy dog, I'd suggest a husky or a border collie. If you like quiet, docile dogs, then go for a bulldog or a mastiff- believe it or not, they're usually couch potatoes.
Then again, choosing a certain breed bred for particular character traits is no guarantee that your dog will exhibit any of them.
My personal favorites, though, are golden retrievers and small dogs, like yorkies. They're just sooooo cute!!

Greyhounds are breed to chase small animals, so they might get our of the yard just to chase a neighbors cat up a tree.
Labs are great dogs, when trained from puppies...they are also nice to have around if your cleaning out your fridge (they are like garbage disposals).
I like German shepherd though...they are very intelligent.

The "best" breed is the one that fits your lifestyle and personality. If you want a layed back calm dog then rule out terriers!
Do some research on breeds you like and see if the breed temperment is right for you. Remember however, pets are like children in the regards they become what you raise them to become. A well behaved pet comes by correct training and socialization. No matter what breed you choose, patience and consistancy are key.
Good luck in your search for your perfect pooch!

Best for what? All breeds of dogs are different and it depends on whether you want a working dog, a hunter or a house dog, maybe a watch dog? I have a boxer and love her with all my heart. She is my friend and companion and I believe would protect me from harm if the need would arise.

The best breed of dog?
The one that's closest enough to you to be petted of course.
They may be different breeds - but they're all the same species.
