Well, a lover is someone you make love to. It's someone who you have a passionate relationship with. A girl friend or boy friend is one of two things:
-A friend who is a girl or a boy, but not in any serious relationship with you
-A boy or a girl who you have a serious relationship with
In a way, both can mean the same thing, but just like Constitution, you'll probably need to clarify sometimes.

Pretty much intensity of the relationship. Boy/Girlfriends carry a more casual meaning. A lover is more serious.
