I love this question.
Vegans do not eat meat or animal by-products. No chicken, beef, fish, turkey, pork, seafood, lamb, etc. That also means no butter, eggs, cheese, milk, cream cheese, ice cream, honey, yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, jell-o, marshmallows etc. Vegetarians do not eat meat but some do eat the animal by-products.
I have found that people who attempt to ascribe to this lifestyle in order to lose weight do just the opposite. They gain b/c they have no idea what to eat and they don't make a proper transition. They eat tons of starches such as potatoes, pasta, breads (sandwiches)....along with junk food such as cookies, chips and pretzels b/c they find that they are SO hungry; they binge on the "goodies". If you do this improperly, you can make yourself sick.
In reality, vegans and vegetarians have great, diverse diets full of fibre and protein. You really need to research this before you try it. Make sure you consume a lot of colors in the form of fruit and veggies, beans and legumes.
Please also understand that many of the vegetarians and vegans take the lifestyle seriously. People practice this way of living for different reasons...it should not be taken lightly. Very few of us do it "to lose weight".
Best wishes.
