Yes you can the limit is three months for any other country its 6 months

Do you still need a passport to go to the EU? I have seen people travel on a photo liscence, mind you they spent a long time at the check out. What is the rule for that?

ABSOLUTELY ! Yes, and even if it expires whilst abroad ( which should not really) you would be allowed to come back, but be expected to be questioned by immigration and provide additional documents. But the answer is yes, 5 months is a lot! 1 week is just about stupid, and still ok.

I know France you can be in the country until the day of expiry. The others you'd have to look up.

If you get a renewel I believe they can carry over the last nine months remaining on the passport.

you can but technically they can still refuse entry most likely to happen after air travel
