Easy to fix even for someone who isn't a mechanic, it's air cooled no water, Unless its an auto stick they are pretty fun to drive, they get good gas mileage, not very roomy and if you are on the freeway alot it might not work out for you, they are pretty reliable cars, and easy to get parts for if you need them, If its what you want get it.
New beetles wish they were as cool as the originals. They look nice but in reality they are a 2.0 Jetta with a different body style, and there are better made cars that are more reliable like a Civic, Accord, Maxima, Corolla

I've owned a 71 VW beetle as a daily driver for the past 10 years ~ I had the engine and the transmission replaced when I first purchased it (I knew ahead of time they needed to be replaced) and since that time, it's averaged about $300 a year in automotive repairs. As others have mentioned, the maintenance is very easy ...even for a ditzy blonde like me.
These older VWs get great gas mileage, parts are very easy to find, & repairs tend to be less expensive because it doesn't have the bells & whistles of the newer models. Car insurance is much cheaper, and quite frankly, older VW beetles are just way cooler than the new ones.
So, it doesn't have AC and the heating system is marginal; for 1/10 of the cost of a new Beetle, I can put up with a certain amount of inconvenience.

Well, dude, it sort of depends on what you want and are willing to.
The old (air cooled) vw's are reliable and take a lot of abuse. They will keep on going and are a unique little car that EVERYONE smiles at. The mileage is not bad (around 30) and it is easy to drive and park
of course, like everything in this world there is a downside
a) The maint. is simple but unforgiving. Monthly service of oil change, and other simple stuff will keep it going and going..but let that slide and it will fail faster...much faster then newer cars.
b) Not as many bells and whistles. If you want bun warmers, GPS units, or even electric seats.. you are buying the wrong car. Heck.. even air conditioning is not really available
c) Safety.. no airbags, marginal fenders and bumpers, but at least it was after the 5mph bumper requirement so that is good for you.. but hey.. just drive normal .
(oh,..and the heat does NOT come from the tail pipes.. there is a heat exchanger from the air which is cooling the engine - no smell at all if your engine is not leaking anything )
good luck with your choice..

The '72 would be a fun car, but you need to know what you're getting into.
Old school Beetles require a lot of routine maintenance. Owning one is a labor of love. If you don't truly love the car, don't buy it, because you won't take proper care of it.
Not trying to be harsh, that's just the way it is. They don't stand for neglect.
If you're willing to devote yourself to it's needs, ie: changing the oil, setting the valves, tune-ups,etc (all frequently), it can be a wonderful vehicle.
Remember: these are not modern cars with niceties such as A/C, power steering/brakes, or even a decent heater.
These are very, very basic vehicles.
If you want a car you need not worry about (as much) that has equipment, then listen to your Mom.

The old Beetles are great, reliable cars but certainly NOT on par with ANY modern car, let alone the "New" Beetle. But then again, I'm sure there's a rather large price difference as well. If you have any specific questions about the '72, let me know, I used to rebuild and modify Beetles back in the day.

I also own a 72 Bug and I drove it daily till just a couple of weeks ago, and under the best circumstances they need to be looked at every 2 weeks to keep them running in top shape.
If you want a more reliable old car becouse you like older styles get a ford or chevy or dodge as there water cooled moters require very little maintance, and parts are cheap for them all especially chevy.

I have a 72 VW Convertible. These are great cars but you must maintain them a lot more than the new cars. You really have to watch the fuel lines on these cars. I just lost mine last night to an engine fire.
They are cheap to fix and really cheap to insure. I would get lots of people would stop me and talk about my car. If you want something that will stand out this is your car. If you want to be like the rest of the world drive the new bug. You see them every where. If you get the old one you will have great memories of it the rest of your life.
