...how were you able to find a professional who was able and willing to evaluate and test you?

I seeked help from mental health services recently, and the only thing the doctors were willing to do was to prescribe antidepressants, and were completely uninterested in trying to figure out what broader psychiatric issues I might be dealing with (they pretty much seemed to think that wasn't their job).

And BTW, just to clarify.... I'm not looking specifically for an autism diagnosis, but a diagnosis of ANYTHING, whether it's ADHD, mild schizophrenia, whatever.

Unfortunately, managed care and Hmo's have resulted in doctors who will not or cannot do their job to their best abilities due to time and money constraints.
You should contact a psychologist - look up your state's psychological association and review their directory. Or, depending on your city, they might also have a local psychological association. Or, talk to people or attend a support group (try finding one online) and ask how they were diagnosed and for a referral. Word of mouth is often the best way.
If you live in California, contact your local Regional Center, that offers free assessment for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. They may also be able to assist you, and since it is a government run program... for free. At least, ask for referrals to psychologists for testing.

Yes, I was diagnosed as having Asperger Syndrome just a few years ago. It's thought that this issue was brought on by another problem I have, that one being Hydrocephalus.
