1. NECTAR is the 'drink of the gods' not mead.
2. MEAD is an alcoholic drink made from honey.
3. Anyone can buy mead - they make it near where I live and it's the best in the world; which is Holy Island mead, made in Northumberland, England.
4. I've drunk Holy Island mead many times and I find it the most delicious drink money can buy!
5. TRIVIA: Mead is a traditional wedding gift, both for 'old' English Christians (i.e. 'Celtic Christians) and also for English Pagans. Mead has magic in it!

Have just read the answers above and must say that NONE of you have ever tasted REAL GENUINE MEAD! Mead isn't 'bitter' or 'too sweet' or 'heavy' I don't know what the heck you drank but it wasn't MEAD!!

Holy Island mead is the DEFINITIVE genuine mead and it could well be mistaken for 'gods nectar' - it's light, scented, warming, delicious, and very special. If ever in North East England you MUST try it!

Mead to me is the Nectar of the gods. If you ever taste it it will change your drinking preferences. I was at a tasting session in California recently and I ran across a company called Wolfleys Brewing and they are bringing back an old style of mead (not the stuff you get in the liquor store) that blew my mind. Go to their Facebook and look em up. they are going to be huge without a doubt and i'm sure if the right people get ahold of this OMG its gonna blow up!!!

I've had it before, and while it's good, I'm not going to consider it an everyday drink. Then again, I'm not much of a wine drinker, so that might be affecting things.

On the other hand, a friend of mine has a recipe for Dew Mead - made with Mountain Dew - that I'm dying to try. :)

mead is still quite a common drink in many central european countries. the bottle that i have at the moment came from poland.

it is sweet and rather insipid - compared to most wines or beers - more of a children's drink than anything else.

though it is better than most alcopops or anything made by anheuser-busch. american budweiser is really not fit for anybody out of nappies (real budweiser is a different story entirely).

....

holy island mead is certainly one of the better ones. but saying that something is a good quality mead is along the general lines of suggesting that sk8er boy is avril lavigne's best record. (it is, but who cares)?

I've had it. But I liked absinthe better (okay, mead tastes somewhat better, but absinthe is far more effective). I was a little disappointed by mead, having been handed the line about "nectar of the gods" and all that. It just wasn't that special, at least to me.

I brew my own. :-)

Currently I've got a case of vanilla mead in bottles, and a gallon of experimental "Red Zinger" that's coming up a bit dry. Best batch ever was probably my famous blueberry mead.

I only use it for ritual purposes though---blot, sumbel, blessings, that sort of thing. I prefer Woodford Reserve bourbon or Balvenie Doublewood Single Malt Scotch the rest of the time . . . mead doesn't go very well with my cigars.

I'm not too fond of honey, but I loves me some mead. How can anyone need any other proof that Odin rocks?

Yes, full of honey. I didn't like it at all. Very heavy and sweet.

edit: Daughter of Isis is correct about the spiced mulled wine in Fredericksburg Tx... We love to go there!
