Our son is 1 week shy of 14 months and tells us it's night night time and tries to climb into his crib and when he wakes up tries to climb out. He cannot climb out yet but should I seriously wait for that to happen? He screams when he can't get out to his toys. He takes his naps regularly and all in all is a very good boy. I think maybe he is telling me he's ready. He can get on and off the sofa and recliner easily for a few months now and has been walking since 10 months old. What's your opinion?

Dr. Schmoo I hope you don't have children! I also will not let our son sleep in our room, as it may work for some he has been sleeping in his own room since 3 months old. I am not going to change that now. I like the idea about setting one up and seeing how he adjusts. :-)

He would only have access to his room (baby gate) which is somewhat limited of toys. It is mainly his sleeping / storytime area. There are a few toys in there but none that he could hurt himself with.

If you have the room in his bedroom, put up a toddler bed and tell him that he can be a big boy and sleep in it. See how he does. If the result is not good, take it down and wait a month or so and try it again.

I think if you can wait, I would wait to move him to a toddler bed. Once you have him in the toddler bed, that will just start a whole new set of problems (getting up at night, wandering the house) and at 14 months, he is much too young to be getting up to play with toys in the middle of the night. There are "crib tents" that are made specifically for children who climb out of their cribs at a young age. I'm not sure of the website, but my sis-in-law's child started crawling out early so they tried a toddler bed but their son ended up getting hurt because he got up to go play in his playroom so they ended up ordering the crib tent and moving him back to his crib. Works like a charm. He started getting out of his crib at 15 months and he is now 26 months and still in his crib-and safe! Good luck!

Our daughters were climbers and we put them into toddler beds around their first birthday (before they were even walking). We were concerned that they would fall and injure themselves when climbing in and out of the cribs. We didn't have any problem with the transition and we feel it was the right thing to do.

We have a new 13 month old and we are planing to also move him into a toddler bed as soon as he is able to get in and out of a bed on his own.

I would reccommed giving it a try.

I converted my son's crib into a bed at 18 months, and I was pretty happy with the way he got on and off himself. Unfortunatley, after a month of having a bed, he fell off and busted his nose on the way down. He's back to a crib now, and he's over 2 years old. He's a crazy little sleeper and I don't feel comfortable with him on his own bed yet. Thats why i say try it out.

It all depends on how much they move around in their sleep. My son could sleep in a toddler bed at around a year. My daughter had to wait till she was almost two. If you really think they are ready, I would put a pillow on the ground next to the bed. Better safe then sorry.

Sounds like it is time for a toddler bed.

As far as the comment from the guy saying "keep it next to your bed"...that is stupid. Why don't you just have the kid sleep with you then? Duh...unhealthy habit to start.
