I used to ask "What is your favorite movie", it told me a lot about the person. They might say some porn flick or some cartoon.

ask him a variety of questions. like whats his favorite guilty secret of his, does he sing in the shower, does he know a britney spears song. keep it light, but over time, gradually move into real conversations about things, where he is going, his plans, etc.

Does he have kids, what is his future goals, what is he doing now to complete those goals, what does he expect from you , what can he offer you (not meaning money but emotionally), have you been to jail, what small thing makes him happy or put a smile on his face, whats his view on life.

Ask him... "What is best in life?" If he answers like Conan...
"To crush your enemies. The see them driven before you. To hear the lamentation of the women." then he is a keeper.
