It's been 6 years since I was there but can remember them having ARFTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service), and of course there was the Star Network which was British, Channel V (sort of like MTV) which was in English some of the time.

It's ATSUGI, outside of Tokyo, north of Yokohama. I was in Yokohama 69-73 (360yen - $1). Drove truck to Atsugi commissary for about 6 months. Small base, friendly town around it. We watched Japanese TV (some American TV shows dubbed in Japanese) and it helped us with our Japanese language we were learning.
Try to make friends with the locals. If you can, live 'on the economy.' I made the mistake of taking Navy housing after being in Japan for 6 months. I never lived in Navy housing the rest of my career.
Immerse yourself in the Japanese culture and you'll enjoy your tour so much more. The last year we were there our social life was almost completely with Japanese. Why? I didn't particularly care for most of the guys I worked with (most were boozers) and those I did hang out with got transferred (Atsugi was scaling down in 71) ; all the families we hung with were Airdales from Atsugi.
My son got stationed in Yokosuka and was able to meet some of the Japanese folks we used to run around with.
First TV show my wife saw in the hotel was a John Wayne movie...he was saying, "Hayaku! Ikimasho!" (hurry up, lets go!).
Enjoy your tour!

Japanese television has a lot of programs that you can listen to in either Japanese or English. They also have a lot of American movies on TV at different times and even American or British tv shows.

Just make sure your tv set can handle the bi-lingual aspect.

You will also find that you can rent videos and DVD's in English at video stores--lots of them.

Japan is a great place-----enjoy it and see what you can and make friends with some Japanese. That will enrich your experience there.

You have several options at Atsugi NAF. If you're on base, you'll have free cable with AFN (9 stations and several local Japanese stations), with an option to pay additional for Americable. If off-base, you can get a free satellite dish for all the AFN stations and/or pay for SkyPerfectTV satellite service (about $30 a month for 68 channels). Lineup at http://www.skyperfectv.co.jp/en/guide/pack/index.html.

You will have AFN (armed forces network). The base will give you a satelite box to access the channels. When i left, we recieved 10 channels.
AFN: Sports
Children
News
Pacific
Atlantic
Korea
Military Channel
Preview Channel
Radio Channel
and one more that I forget.

They have no commercials and all military style advertising. it isnt horrible, but it gets old.

LOL...yes, it's called FEN (Far East Network) enjoy your one channel. But watching Japanese TV can be rather entertaining. You want some fun, you have to watch Bonanza in Japanese. Have fun.
