Look at it this way. Light moves in the form of a wave. It's sort of like a sinus wave in geometry that goes up and down as it moves from left to right. These bumps and dips above and below the center line are how bright, the color...suff like that. But the wave also goes in and out of the page as well as up and down ON the page. And it goes in all the directions at the same time too.
Sort of like a wave traveling along the surface of the sea. It moves toward shore. Now take the same up and down wave moving along but it's going sort of in all the directions of the clock at the same time. So some are 6 to 12, some from 7 to 1, some are 8 to 2, 9 to 3, 10 to 4....etc.
If you wanted to limit the wave going through a wall, all you'd have to do is make a grate that just allows those waves that go from 7 to 1 (for instance). The other waves would hit the wall, but those lined up along the 7 to 1 direction would pass right through. AND if you turned the grating 90 degrees, NONE would get through.
Thats what polarized lenses do to light. Just allow one direction of the wave to pass through. Get another lens off the glasses rack and if it's polarized, when you turn it 90 degress, the two lenses will turn black. So you look through one lens and hold the other lens out and rotate it in a clockwise or counterclockwise way, you'll see it get dark then light then dark.
Non polarized glasses don't have a grate that limits light that are in 'other' directions. So all the light gets through.

Regular sunglasses provide a tint that reduces light transmission making it more comfortable for a person to see in brighter light conditions. When light reflects off a smooth surface it is usually polarized in a horizontal manner. Polarized sunglass lenses are made to block reflections/glare in the horizontal plane without bleaching out the colors.
This blocks glare and reflections from roads, water and other surfaces that can sometimes be blinding otherwise.
Having polarized lenses is great for fishing because it blocks the reflection on top of the water so you can see clearly into the water. They are also great for driving and outdoor sports.
Polarized lenses do not work well with some types of LCD screens.... when viewing some LCD screens wearing polarized sunglasses the print on the screen can become invisible.
I would definitely recommend getting a pair of polarized sunglasses... they are a great investment :)

In a nutshell, polarized lenses reduce glare from water, flat road surfaces etc. There is debate about whether they are effective with snow. The use of polarized lenses is most beneficial when doing outdoor activities such as fishing, sunbathing, boating, hunting, biking, etc. They sometimes hinder vision from LCD screens such as ATM machines and some dashboard displays. Sometimes they make these readouts virtually invisable. Most non-polarized lenses do little if anything to reduce glare. Polarized lenses are designed to counteract the horizontal polarization of the surfaces that glare by creating a verticle polarization.

Polarised sunglasses have kenses which only let through some of the light which hits them. Non polarised let it all through.
