Elvira Arellano, an immigrant who came to the United States illegally, has taken refuge in a Chicago church in hopes she can avoid deportation and stay in America with her young U.S.-born son.

Immigration officials consider her a fugitive, and say they have the right to arrest her anywhere -- including the church. Lynette Kalsnes of Chicago Public Radio talks with Madeleine Brand about whether the church has the right to "sanctuary" from the law.

I think any church breaking the laws should loss all tax exempt status and be imprisoned!

They should storm the place and arrest everyone involved.

I simply can not understand the warped sense of "entitlement" these people exhibit.

Demand the government do it's job!

Deport this woman! ASAP!

I think ICE should make a list of all the cities, and Churches that are claiming "sanctuary" for illegals. It would make it easier to go get them all. Arrest them, ready them for deportation, and escort off U.S. soil.

Besides sanctuary is a term used to protect one from being persecuted. She's not being persecuted, she's being deported for breaking U.S laws, as well as other laws within the U.S. The ID theft thing.

I'd like to know exactly what would happen if she and others pulled this type of thing on Mexico's soil. And if Mexico wouldn't put up with it, then why should the U.S..

I agree wholeheartedly! This so called church should lose all priviledges and since they aren't obeying the separation between church and state, they should be taxed accordingly. I really want to see this loud mouthed woman deported and to take her child with her. I don't think that any church should be allowed to harbor fugitives. I'll never understand why these people think that they are above the law, I'd never go into anyone's home and demand they feed me,etc. which is what these illegals have actually done. apparently, they were not reared with any morals, values or sense of respect for anything but what they want. Another detriment to our polite society.

I am in full agreement. Claiming "sanctuary" is a myth from the old days. The church claims they are within their legal rights to do what they are doing. What about the rights of the rest of the citizens and legal residents of this nation that HAVE to follow the laws of this land to expect others to do the same? We lock up people that break laws everyday - and I don't see the church offering to provide "sanctuary" to the drug pushers and murdering thieves that are currently on the run from the law.

But again, this is a case of choosing what laws are acceptable to break and which criminals have rights and which don't.

Absolutely! Not only is she a criminal for being here but she is also guilty of forgery - that's a felony! She should have been deported long ago.

Any church that gives an illegal sanctuary (AKA harbors an illegal alien criminal) should loose their tax exempt status.

I don't know what they are waiting on. Any one of my local law officers could get her with no problem. Are they scared? Is she A really big & mean woman? Does she have weapons? There has got to be A reason.

I agree with you. Didn't that illegal alien commit ID fraud and destroyed someones life because of her actions? She has no respect for our laws and should be deported NOW! And she is a terrorist because of her comments about bringing down the USA because the amnesty bill did not go through.

Of course they should get her and her kid out of here. We're talking about 2 people here, not numbers. This is a perfect opportunity to set a precedent for this kind of criminal behavior.

Chuirches no longer offer "sanctuary" against temporal (or secular) law. They do have the right to go in and detain her.
