I just bought a new house (yay!!) and I need some help with my kitchen. My cabinets are dark cherry and my counter tops are black. What color should I paint my kitchen to brighten it up?

Congratulations! What fun you are going to have in your new home.

I would probably go with a buttery yellow. Not bright, but creamy.

Beige/creme/tan would work as well...but is a bit boring.

A 'Robin's Egg' blue would be fabulous!

Most of all have fun. I hope this helps. :)

That's very Goth for a kitchen. To me, a kitchen is a happy place, and should be sunny, and bright. I think you should do more than paint it! Rip that cherry, and black out, and re-do it entirely! How is lavender, and white? The shelves, white, the paint a soft lavender.
I was practically born in the kitchen, lol, and found it to be a homey place. Kids especially are attracted to light, bright colors. Do you have any kids? Do you want kids, if you don't? Cooking is a way to bring parents, and their children closer together, and having a happy looking kitchen will help a child to want to be in one. My son cooks with me all the time. He always wants to add goofy ingredient's to a dish were cooking, but hey! He's creative! BBQ sauce, and pickles on pancakes!
PS I won't let him eat that!

hmm i would suggest a yellow that's strong enough to hold up next to the cabinets. for example butter yellow might not be such a great idea. invest in large paint chips (18"x18") they are like 4 dollars each but they give you a good sense of color on an expanse. if you dont want to spend on chips use a solid bath towel or solid fabric. color truly needs to be seen on an expanse. looking at little chips can be deceiving and costly and aggravating. congratz on the house!

I did a sage green with that combo and it looked great but you can do just about anything you want. At the paint store, pick out the color strips that you think you would like and see how they look in your kitchen...day and night. I did that for quite some time before making the decision.

A pale yellow or a pale green. We have cherry furniture in our bedroom, and just painted it with something called "woven basket." It's a light yellow and looks great. Good luck, and Congratulations on the new house!

My son has the same kind of kitchen. He has a creamy yellow color on the walls (not bright yellow!) and it looks great.
Make sure it is more on the tan side of yellow. It looks kind of Tuscan. You can go to www.sherwinwilliams.com and go through their palate of colors to see what you like best. Good luck

go with a semi-gloss cream color. goes great with black countertops. the light will reflect off the painted surface and brighten it up.

Congratulations on your new home. I'd say do a light tan color. Another color that may look nice is a off white or a light yellow. Below are a few photos for ideas.

I painted my burnt Alfredo sauce. One little jar will do a whole kitchen.

Something neutral and earthy. Make sure you use semi gloss. I would probably go with a sage green.
