Yes, not only should they have a dress code, they should have a uniform. There are so many pressures on young people. Uniforms take away the clothing aspect of the school caste system. I.e. who's wearing brand names, who's parents are poor, etc.

Yes, they should have a dress code at the very least. A six year old should not be dressing like Britney Spears, and it's even more disruptive if a 16 year old does it! (C'mon, think about those salivating boys - how can a teacher get a lesson taught with that disruption?) Moreso, Lillith's idea of uniforms in every school is a better plan = School is not a fashion show, nor is it the time or place to try to one-up each other with brands and stuff. It sets up the kids who can't afford the brands or don't care about the trends to be ridiculed and excluded. (I know. I was one of the kids who first couldn't afford them, then began to not care about them.) It also causes an issue if someone has the "hot item" - how many kids get mugged for their sneakers? Too many!

My opinion is that schools should have a dress code.
Moderation in dress in an educational setting.
You would not want an employee showing up in low rise, jeans and a short tummy showing shirt, with flip flops on. It is not appropriate in school either.
I like the idea of school uniforms, I think it takes out the status of students based on there clothing choices. The problem I see with uniform is that the styles are ridiculously outdated. If there were a uniform that had some style to it that would be great.

Haha, that is nothing. Try a private school.
Dress code for uniform days:
-Kilt with kilt pin
-Polo or turtleneck with school's logo, in either white or navy blue
-Socks above the ankles in either white or blue
-Closed toe and heel dress shoes in either blue or black
-From Thanksgiving to May, blue dress pants are acceptable
-Only school sweaters or sweatshirts are permitted
-Only natural hair colors allowed
-No piercings other than the ears
-Only a small cross on a thin chain, no other jewelry
-No nail polish allowed
Dress up days
-Skirts must be appropriate length and cannot be jean
-Shirts must be appropriate with no cleavage, and no spaghetti straps
-Pants can be khaki or dress pants, no jeans
-Shoes can be peep-toe, but must have a back
Dress down days
-No pajama pants
-No sport sandals, or flip flops
-No clogs
-No backless shoes
-No holey jeans
-No short shorts
-No straps thinner than a piece of lasagna
I wish my school had been as lenient when I was in school. Every school should have a dress code, as long as it is not too extreme. We were all academically beyond our public school counterparts b/c we weren't as concerned with clothes and boys...not to say we weren't fashionable:) On dress down and up days it was a competition. And by the way, of course she can wear it with a shrug, so buy her a cute little shrug.

well, if every body dresses the same it cuts down on people being judged by what they wear and where they buy it from. Not every body can afford American Eagle or wants to shop there even if they can afford it. When everybody is dressed the same it's easier to concentrate on academics instead of trying to see who's dressed the most like a skank or what ever. Dress codes are the great equalizer!!!
Personally I'm in favor of uniform type clothes like no name brand jeans or khakis, no name brand polo style shirts in any color etc..... yes, it does cut down on being able to express yourself but there is the week-end when that can be done.

I think yes to some degree all schools should have a dress code. However, some go overboard. The stomach showing thing is good, and the sleeveless is good. But showing toes is nothing bad. Girls should be able to wear flip flops and sandals. with shorts and skirts I think they are crazy, we should be able to wear tank tops and spaghetti straps. What are they thinking?

I think there should be a few guidelines but your niece's school sounds way, way too picky. I think above the knee is OK, I think sleevelss is OK, I think open toed shoes are OK. I agree that nothing transparent, no half-shirts, no off-color words on T-shirts, etc. Yes they should have a dress code but after all it is not 1950 any longer.

Yes, all schools should have dress codes. The concentration should be on schoolwork not a designer name or worse, scantily dressed little girl. And no one has to worry about being beat up over a pair of Skechers!

Schools are not picky.
Dress code is the school etiquette.
Expose the perfoemance of the students and the school in public.
Makes them look bright and coloutful too.
With time those gifts of life was lost with time.
With our creator's places of worship being turn into a den of thieves.
