You've got it! It is so simple that people can't accept this explanation. How did the native Americans get here? They walked on an ice bridge of course. When did the last ice age receed? About ten thousand years ago, before that it never rained because the ice flows captured every particle of moisture in the atmosphere and oceans were lower. The ice covered the tops of the mountains. During the last warming period, the ice no longer captured all the water particles, and a thin vapor barrier began to form, which when it was heavy enough, would fall to earth in a great downpour.

I'm gonna play "god's advocate" here and tell you that that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, if you take it in context with the rest of the story. I'm pretty sure it was an ocean (or salt-water sea) that he supposedly walked on, and those don't really freeze. Even if it was high up enough north to become a glacier, why would there be a boat on it?
I like the first answer's explanation the best.

Naw, he was walking on an underwater sand bar just beneath the surface. He went off that direction at that time because he knew the sun's reflection wouldn't let the apostles see the sand bar.
This also would explain why Peter began to sink -- he was walking the wrong angle and was going down the slope of the sandbar, or hit a pocket of loose sand.
