Depends on the MOS. Combat arms jobs spend most of their non-field time cleaning weapons, vehicles and equiptment. They also are the ones that clean the bases( sweep up leaves , cigarrette butts and trash around the barracks). There is also alot of barracks cleaning. Eventually, you will train for your job. Non combat arms jobs (medics, office personnel, cooks, mechanics, etc) pretty much get up and go to work like a 9-5 civilian job. Alot of those m.o.s.'s don't even make you do p t in a group. Unlike the National Guard, full time active duty do not go out and help the civilian world.

Most people in the military have regular jobs. They aren't all just infantry. I was a mechanic in the Marines. I fixed and did maintenance on gear in the states and when I got deployed to Iraq I fixed the same gear there. I didn't go through clearing houses and doing patrols, some do, many don't.

It depends on your job. A computer technician or a mechanic would stil have regular work to do. Trucks don't stop breaking down, and computer networks still crash. For combat units, you train so that you are better for the next time you deploy.
Most military people have plenty to do when they are stateside.

Being prepared for deployments is a very time consuming process. For the Air Force anyway, there are phases the unit goes through....the actual deployment, training, and pre-deployment preparation. It's basically training, training, and training some more.

Train and keep everything ready for deployment.
I was in a combat unit. We trained and worked hard and played even harder. We never knew when are last day was.
Kept equipment clean and in working order for deployment when we weren't in the filed training.

Before I retired, my field was communications so I did the
same job all the time. Others continued training and upkeep
of equipment. Sometimes there were voluntary community
actions that we all got involved with.

I worked. My field was a 24/7/365 operation, so whether we were deployed or not we worked. Soldiers and Marines train and train and train.

They have jobs. My husband works on ships when he isn't deployed. He's on medical hold though and currently he's working with computers. They do whatever they were trained to do, just not overseas.
