Yes But it takes a special person t odo this job. You do have to love it or not work in that field Its hard and gureling and very frustrating. I worked with developmental disabled adults, but it is SO rewarding. They often give great medical benifits and lots of vac/sick time cause they know you need it. It is easy to burn out from this type of work so really do it cause you want to do it. There are 2 types of people in this field...thoes who have jobs, and thoes who DO thier job.

I worked in the CD unit of a state hospital. Truthfully, some of the staff were more mentally ill then some of the clients. I had a counseling partner who was active bulemic. She would come to group therapy in the afternoon wreaking of puke. It was about 1/2 and 1/2 the good staff were really good, but the incestuous politics of working in a state hospital wasn't my cup of tea. I left after two years. I got out of the field altogether. I've found it you don't keep your own bucket very full your going to get sick. And a state hospital doesn't do my in the way of bucket filling.
My 2 cents.

Yes, I put in 10 years working for the state of Texas, in a psychiatric hospital! And I learned a lot about the medical profession! you learn a lot about different medical problems, how the state assesses the rehab, and the politics involved also! For me it was a rewarding experience, because I worked with all different types of patients! And I worked with all different types of co-workers! And you are going to run into all that information that Mary P. posted, it's
true, it's there!

psychiatric hospital?
no....
and i think the type of work a person "enjoys" would depend upon their interests.. if a person is into helping and caring for others, then it might be a good job.
