I might be wrong but I believe manna in the Bible is most closely associated with a type of fowl meat. The meat (manna) described is closest to quail in consistency, flavor, and texture. This is why it spoiled very quickly.

I always remember hearing stories of it being sugary and flaky, much like the dried accumulation of aphid (or other sap sucking insects) poop. If you've ever seen this under a large tree, it is definitely significant and could be eaten...but then again, you'd be eating poo.
