Why do people always say that. Its as if New York is the only place to "make it" and if you try to make it elsewhere you wont make it unless you make it in New York first.

There are loads of people who have pursued their careers and ventures in other cities and have mega-success.

Why is it that New York is looked at as the "only place to make it", and if you dont make it here you cant make it nowhere else?

I lived in NY all my life. I'm 44 years old and I'm ready to LEAVE this city and start a life elsewhere. Does this mean I'm running away from the challenges in New York or I'm scared and want to try to make it in a city that's EASIER to "make it"? Does this mean I'm giving up in New York and I wont make it elsewhere?

They just mean that there's so much competition in New York that if you can succeed there, you can succeed anywhere else because nothing is as hard as making it in New York. I don't know if it's necessarily true, but in my field (law) it is considered a place of steep competition where attorneys make the most money and work the hardest. It is true that after you practice in New York at a good firm for a few years, you can go anywhere else.

You've already "done" NY. Go try something new. I think the worst sort of New Yorker is the one that thinks the whole world revolves around "the City" and there's nothing else worth doing outside of Manhattan. There are plenty of wonderful places to live that have a different vibe that yo may like better. You're not giving up, you are making a change. You only have one life - why waste it where you're not happy, and for whom?? "Them"? Best of luck, I hope you do it.

It's just a song. I've been there a few times and saw no more challenges than most any other large city. But even if there are is that somehow a good thing?

But I think you're going to be in for a great shock if you think somehow you're going to find other places 'easier'. You're going to find cities are much the same but with minor differences and small towns are 'friendly' only if you were born there and filled with people who have nothing better to do than judge you and poke their noses into your business.

Stay in NY where you can keep telling yourself that you could make it anywhere.

NY is a ghetto with too high cost of living

you probably think that your $5000/month rent is normal till you find a place that's only $200 outside of a city and you will make it just fine

New york would be an awesome place to live if i was rich.
Rent is way to expensive.
Putting up with traffic?>screw that.
I like my simple little life and less crime rate.

It's called being happy and everyone is different.
