Its just an indicator that the New York environment is one of the toughest in the world to "make it" and the most diverse as well. So if you do "make it" in New York, you shouldnt have a problem anywhere else. It has really proven out. I used to live in New York. I have worked in the the top positions in every company I have worked in outside of New York and now work as an independent contractor to the rich and famous, as well as owning several key industry patents. My sister brought her nursing experience from New York - she now heads a nursing division in North Carolina because how she works is just that good compared to how everyone else works that does not have the same experiences.

New York has it all. You know that, having lived there all your life. To explore life elsewhere is not running away at all; in fact, it may be a run towards something. Are you tired of the noise, dirt, heat, hustle of NYC? That's understandable. But then ask yourself if you want the sterility and uniformity of the suburbs. And I don't mean Jersey 'burbs because those are still New York-accessible. Imagine yourself in a place where nothing is walking distance and you have to have a car. Do you think you'd like that?
I'm not saying to stay in NYC; I'm just suggesting you ask yourself some real life-style questions. Think about it and research it a lot before doing anything irrevocable.
Much luck. I hope you find what will make you feel fulfilled.

I think you're misunderstanding that cliche.
It basically means that NY is a tough place; it's competative, expensive and has more culture than any other city in the world. If you can manage to find your way through all of that, you'll be set to survive life in any other city. It, in no way, degrades other places or suggests that other cities don't have anything to offer.
It just means that if you can take what NY will throw at you, you'll be fine in anything else you do in life.
Best of luck to you. As a NY transplant, I sometimes wish that other native NYers would venture outside of this city. It's a big world out there that doesn't stop after the 5 boroughs.

It's a cliche. Some aspects of NYC are difficult and competitive - Wall St, the arts.
I lived there for almost 7 years (as an ordinary citizen, not sometine trying to 'make it big') and loved it. I enjoyed the bustle. I moved to another city to take a better job and then found love - but I still think of NYC as a second home.

22 million people in NY Metro area. Only LA Metro area comes close with 16 million. Many in NYC with big dreams of becoming rich and famous, only a few however make it. Too many competitors for the same prize of fame and fortune.

The saying refers to the fast-paced and usually cutthroat mentality of New Yorkers. Also the cost of living is one of the most expensive in the US. Basically if you can put up with the New York attitude and speed of life, it means you can put up with whatever any other city throws at you.

I think you are interpreting that saying wrong. What that means is that it is hard to make it in this world and even harder in NY than anywhere else....which is true. It is not putting down success in the rest of the country or world.

i pass to could pass with Keith city's "you will think of of Me." that's catchier, that's greater radio-friendly and, in all honesty, i think of city's an more desirable all-around musical artist (and a rattling stable guitarist). I purely wish Keith city's greater contemporary textile wasn't as undesirable because it somewhat is ("you will think of of Me" isn't secure in that final assertion--that's an older song of his).
