I have my system set up as described in the manual and as I have done on previous systems with no problems. My problem is when the sound is turned down low or the tv is off with the surround sound on, I have a very annoying hum. Not sure where it is coming from but I believe from the sub. It is not noticable when the sound is playing at normal levels. What could be causing this?

this is my specialty subject hifi cabling
there are 3 reasons you get hum
1.make sure its not being picked up by having the interconnecting audio cables routed too near the mains supply leads
2 make sure the cables you are connecting with are quality shielded cables people rave about oxygen free jobbies but i honestly cant tell the difference between these and standard QUALITY leads.
3 choose the main audio component of your system and ONLY CONNECT THE OUTER BRAID AT THAT END its called STAR EARTHING otherwise you can cause a hum loop!
if you have standard coax cable linking up your components, remove the outer braid from one end of the cable so that it is only connected to the main device in your system - usually the amplifier make sure the braid runs as close to the end of the center signal cable as possible - without touching it for optimum protection.

Sounds like you are getting a Ground Loop or AC Humm. You should have a good quality Surge protector and all your devices plugged into that surge protector.
I would recommend reading the link below as it will most likely help you resolve your problem and understand the cause of it.

Switch out your cables for higher quality ones. Speaker wire, RCA cables, Optical, etc.
