I've just always wondered, what my Pentecostal friends mean by it.

They believe they are speaking in some "unknown" language or a "prayer language". Then they believe that someone else needs to translate this to everyone else. Personally, I believe that it was real and I was meant to understand what was being said, I would understand.

Also, the gift of tongues is the ability to learn a new language quickly in order to serve God. Many missionaries have mastered a new language in a matter of weeks when doing God's work.

The theory is a spirit of some type enters you and takes control and speaks through you.

In the true Biblical sense it should be in a language that is real. One you generally don't know (although that is not hard and firm) and it should be readily interpreted under NORMAL interpretal means.

If a 12 year old White American girl, for example, were to start speaking in ancient Greek or Aramatic and a Greek Scholar or Arab can come in and listen to them and tell you what they are saying, then it is a legitimate issue or phenomenon.

The Catholic view is that sometimes this can be demonic, but not always.

Speaking in tongues means speaking in diffrent languages. This is supposed to be the gift of the holy spirit to anyone overcome by it. But the problem is, it is unscientific besides the fact that it is illogical. I can speak 5 languages aside from the 10 local dialects i know from my country, which I studied by the way and not a gift from HS, but whenever I visit these christian gatherings who are claiming to be "speaking in tongues" I find them speaking gibbirish!

I wonder does the langauge of the holy spirit gibbirish? Can it not speak hebrew, greek, arabic, spanish or even simple english?

Speaking in tongues was a gift from the Holy Spirit used to communicate. It no longer is useful. Today's speaking in tongues is suppose to indicate the presence of the Holy Spirit but it is not. Anyone can speak in tongues. You don't have to be Christian to do it.

Due to enormous pressure and stress you start to hallucinate and your brain breaks down and you start talking gibberish. So just a temporary mental disorder. Another option is you can learn languages and then you really can talk in tongues.

They mean you can talk in gibberish, but the true meaning of tongues is a language, like French, Spanish.

Talk in tongues should not be taken literally. It means talking or speaking in different languages.
