Some practical ideas for you:
-- Go to a nearby temple/ Church/Gurudwara/Mosque some evenings, if you are religious minded. This will give you peace of mind.
-- Explore the new place. Just go alone! You will enjoy it. Whenever you are lonely, walk up to near-by areas.
-- Send an email or call your relatives
-- Go to public places such as libraries when you have free time in evening
-- You have common tv in hostel? Watch it.
-- Listen to music.
-- Spend time surfing the web.

It's all about enlightenment. No matter where you are, you are qualified. You belong. Whatever place you find yourself, you have just as much right to be there as anyone else because we're all human.
There's a line from this Beatles song "all you need is love". It goes "there's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be..." So don't worry about what people think. That just makes things worse because it gives off that vibe and then people might begin to treat you like you're inferior and then that will make you feel worse.
Just don't let your ego control you. Don't be paralyzed by your fears. Be fearless. Take control of your life. Be a warrior.

There are good ones (including a number that no longer frequent this place. A shame, really), irrelevant ones (usually those that slipped in from a certain other category that requires no special mention) and pretenders (non-academic couch philosophers like myself). Positively most anyone who spend too much time absorbed in thought can get depressed easily. It depends very much on what they occupy their minds with.

You tell me the answers for the following questions . What is your age, Is this the first time you come out of your place alone for your studies, Are you a only boy to your parents. Do you have a lot of friends in your own place. These answers will be giving me a clear idea that you are quite new to this place. Make one friend in one day and visit your parents house at least once in one month otherwise ask your parents to come and see you at least one month once till you are alright . Mostly you will be alright once you go round with the circle of new friends and the situation . Do not worry. You will be alright soon Yours VRVRAO

This is very common. Give yourself a pat on the back for making such a big move in your life. Shy or not, you have the courage to do what it takes to succeed in life, even if it makes you uncomfortable in the beginning. Many people do not have this sort of courage. Give it time and I think you'll find yourself getting more comfortable and acclimated soon. I hope things work out for you.

i'm sorry you're feeling this way.
i think that when some of us are put into a new situation, it takes time to blossom.
if you can, join some groups which are associated with school? maybe you can meet people that way?
i don't know how much time you have before school starts, but maybe you can join a gym, a swimming or exercise group or take karate lessons -- something which interests YOU and gets you out into the world?
i hope you get some good advice/answers here!
take care

Try to just go to a busy place and walk about a bit. When you buy something, slip it in that you are new to the town.
Also you could see if the town has a website, that way you can check what events are happening. If they have a message board even better!!!
Good Luck

You have not done much on yourself. and you expect too much..
You have to read and look within why you are so.. You have to get more Self confident , for this you read ..
Dr.Wayne Dyre books starting from Your Erroneous Zones, Pulling Your Strings, Sky is the Limit.
then read one book Born to Win by Dorothy Jongeward /...?
there are many heavy and confusing books but these are simple and right
Dr. Wayne Dyer will help you much to gather your will power ...
Dr.Dorothy will just make you humble ..
But before you make humble you have to be strong.
Weak people are humble .. but they are outwardly so.. inside they are not so..
start now your self help therapy . if you work hard on this ,, you will be sure on the path of peace and happyness
