I hope so.
Otherwise he would be the pinnacle of bi-polar, abusive parents.

I personally think the idea is absurd that an invisible man lives in the sky, a man who watches everything you do every second of every day, but is not considered a pervert for watching over women while they use the restroom. And this man who lives in the clouds has a list of 10 thing he does NOT want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he'll send you to a place of fire and torture and burning, and pain to suffer for all eternity......but he loves you.
Does no one else see how insane this is? Seriously?

It depends on how the analogy is used. In any case, if you don't believe in something, ANY analogy will seem absurd to you, so thinking the analogy is absurd doesn't mean much.

If you're talking about an abusive, baby-killing, raping, pillaging father then yes. Otherwise... the whole God thing to me is absurd. Not saying that meanly, I just believe that there is no one 'who' to the universe superior to all others. I like to believe there is a cosmic energy best understood just by being in wonder of everything around you. I feel it. This does not make it true though, of course. Giving God human attributes (yes, yes, Christians, I know he's a spirit and Jesus is his son in your book) like wrath and jealousy and vindictiveness is absurd. Believing in a sky daddy is absurd. To abandon all power to "one great entity" is too much for me. And to hate and spread fear and injustice in his/her/it's name? Despicable.

actually, original texts say god is the Mother/Father, but that is not the point you are making I'm sure.
Parents are the 'source', children are the receivers. Children grow up to become the source for other children.
I think its a pretty fair analogy.

No actually God is the father of our spirits. Not an analogy at all.

YES!
Human parents only create more humans. They didn't create the world and human nature ITSELF and they don't have divine powers (that they refuse to use).
As far as I can see, the story of God is that he created, only to immediately condemn, human nature. Sexual desire is what propogates the species. Envy can lead to following another's example of how to succeed. And yet the doctrine tells us these things and even THOUGHTS of these things are sinful.
It is absurd. We're supposed to be talking about a divine creator, not a human parent who had no part in creating the context in which we all fail...oh wait, I mean live (sorry, started feeling religious there for a second).

I think many fathers and other "lords" modeled themselves after him. And in fact considered Jesus' turn the other cheek stuff not to apply to them, that was God the son after all, why should the father have to listen to the son? And doesn't the bible say honor thy father? Calling god "father" has more impact on the image of fathers than the image of god.
edit: capitalctu: exactly my point.

Yes, an analogy should be different than the literal truth.

I do! If god is anything like my own father, who told me I would grow up to be a cyber stalker in denial who cheated on my wife with phone sex with strangers and had a whole pile of fettishes - yeah, that would be...crazy-talk!

God is like a father. He loves us. And I love Him in my heart and in my soul.
