It's been fairly obvious to me that a lot of people have "found" religion after a particular lowpoint in their life and they want to "go straight".
A post that was made recently (a couple questions below this one) preyed on that thesis that when your down and out, and others have betrayed you, and you have no friends, god is always there.
Now, maybe I'm wrong, but by and large, the people I know are basically good hearted, and for anyone one of them to be completely down and out with no friends, would mean they have done something unforgivable in peoples eyes.
It seems that at this point, religion steps in and says "doesn't matter how low you stooped, we'll welcome you".
Does this mean that there is a fair proportion of Christians that have perpetrated more heinous crimes in their "pre-religious" state than most of us atheist "sinners" will commit in our life?
If so, how can god justify allowing them into heaven when they have caused more pain than atheists

OK so to clarify, when I say a "fair" proportion, I mean a percentage of the total that is not insignificant (i.e. 10% is "fair", 0.00000001% is insignificant)
And to clear up, this is based on observation of facts, not theory.

This all depends on how you look at it. I think Christianity tries to send a message of love and compassion, of a benevolent who is always there to turn to. Many people find comfort in that, and personally, I believe that if you can find faith and comfort in something in this world it's not a bad thing. But, one trait of Christianity is the need to proseletyze, or spread the word to others. You know, missionaries, self-help groups, those people that come to your door or hand out bibles on campus - they all believe they are doing God's work by bringing more sheep to His flock. I'm not aware of any other major world religions that share this trait, in fact, most religions are more "place-based" and believe their revelation is for their certain people in their certain place at a certain time. I think Christianity may have started out like this (hence the Crusades and battles for the Holy Land), but has been perverted. Christians refuse to accept any new alterations to the message, but many couldn't point to Jerusalem on a map. So I think what we're dealing with with Christianity today is a complete perversion of the original message. I mean, we use a translation of the bible done by a King for political gains!
I'm not trying to get down on Christianity - like I said, it works for some people and that's great. I think that most people are good hearted and are looking for something to cling to for whatever reason. To be fair, I know that being brought up in the church I was told that there is no degree of sin, all that matters is that you have faith in God and give your life to Him. So that is why they get to "go to heaven" while atheists do not - though this is a pretty elementary interpretation.
Personally, I believe that all religions have it at least partially right. I also will say that studying evolution has actually made me more spiritual, because it is the most beautiful, intricate process - you can see God in it, I guess! I think it's a bad idea for anyone to take anything in religion too literally, but to look at it all as potential pieces of the puzzle, and to follow what makes you feel right in your heart. The afterlife will take care of itself:-)

Does that mean I'm not a big enough lowlife for the Christians around here? None seem to prey on me or pray for me... Maybe I should start doing drugs or something. I know what you're talking about though. A lot of the Christians I know have done TERRIBLE things I've never even considered doing. Felonies, beatdowns, molestations, rapes, nasty behavior (besides sarcasm from anger at stupidity) etc.

Oh yes, quite. Religion, especially Christianity, makes it a point to catch the person at their lowest point. Because if things were going well for an Atheist, they'd never stoop to believing in religion.
I call it preying on the weak and its despicable.

A good question, which raises others.
It`s never made the least sense to me, but it has to do with being closer to God through asking forgiveness. I think the parable of the Prodigal Son is a key text here.
Personally, I`ve always been on the Roman side. Jesus and his accolytes are a bunch of freaks in my humble opinion.
Send `em to the lions!

I didn't have a lot of friends but I have never done anything terrible, so your thesis is a little off.
I don't know what a "low life" is supposed to be, but no, we do not prey upon the weak. The Lord is there for the friendless. so why fault God because He is there for us?

I used to sell the vast subject, you does not have faith what number cases human beings could take place to objective to transform me to a minimum of one faith or yet another (in lots of cases Christianity). They appeared to assume that because of the fact i became homeless on the time that i became in want of 'non secular preparation' or 'saving'. My psychological state became wonderful, i could have favored it if that they had have the two in simple terms stopped bothering me, or extra suited nevertheless shown a number of their 'Christian kindness' and offered a mag, particularly than judging me. They in simple terms approximately by no skill offered a mag.

I don't know about 'fair proportion', but there are some born again Chritians that have committed heinous crimes. It is not for us to decide if they are worthy. That is between them and God. 'We' don't allow people into heaven, God does.

Your accusation is the base of my faith.
God is unfair!! He accepted sinners!! I mean, God, with sinners? Amazing!!!
We all sin, so I don't claim Christians sin less than atheists (well, I don't claim that). I'm not confident Christians don't sin; I'm confident God can forgive our sins.

Good hearted doesn't get you to Heaven.
God loves you--just the way you are.
Unconditional love.
God forgives you if you go to Him -asking forgiveness for everything you've EVER done , EVER WILL do, and the things that you KNOW BETTER that you did anyway--He is that LOVING and MERCIFUL.
But He doesn't take your WORDS--He listens to your HEART!!
