In my region, there are coyotes. Fencing is not an option for me. Is there a scent, or some sort of device, something we can put out to keep the coyotes from our land?
I would rather not be shooting them. It isn't open season anyway.

Again, I do not want to shoot them, I just want to keep them away. It IS for our pets, and to give some of the deer a chance.
I live in the Northeast. The DEC thought it good to re-introduce some of the animals. Not so good if you ask me.

Geeeezzzzzzz People read these things and miss the obvious. You say you live in the Northeast and a responder assumes you live in the Southwest....Acmeraven....LOL where the heck do you propose to get Mountain Lion scent from? I laughed so hard when I read that one I almost wet my pants!

OK Now to address your question..There is nothing you can do to prevent Coyote's from invading your property in light of the circumstances you describe. There is no powder or solution you can spread around that will drive them away. Scarecrows will not work on Coyotes...LOL..They are compulsive eaters and travel long distances to get food and water. I have cousins that live in New York State that had a Coyote come into their small backyard , killed and ate their Yorkshire Terrier (Dog). I have hunted them out west and seen them come up on the Ranchers porches and eat dog food out of the bowls. They are clever, smart, excellent hearing abilities, but wary animals and will take a mile when given an inch. The only two solutions I've ever heard of is shooting them or poisoning them with treated meat. Both radical idea's. DNR WILL NOT relocate trapped Coyote's under any circumstances, they can carry disease and spread them to an area not contaminated prior. You can Check with your local DNR and confirm what I've told you and at the same time find out if there is an actual season for Coyotes in your area/state. If they are doing livestock or crop damage all states offer special tags for the taking of preditors. Good Luck

If it's in your property, you are legally allowed to blast it anyway you want (as long as the method is legal.)

There are no scents or anything that can keep them away.

This probably won't work, but if you live on a farm, maybe some scarecrows would serve double purposes. If the coyote thinks it sees a human it might or might not run away, which is why the scarecrow might be a long shot but might work.

You could set up traps but that wouldn't keep it away from your land.

So besides fencing, I cannot think up of a good way of keeping it away from your land. Come to think of it, hanging coyote corpses isn't that bad of an idea.

there isn't a season for hunting coyotes. they are a pest animal, along with groundhogs which you can shoot as many as you want any time even on Sundays, but you cant shoot after dark. my grandparents have alpacas (small llamas) and the coyotes will eat them. we have a .22 magnum but it is too small, and is a rim fire so it will not reach out more than 100 yards with enough energy and power to kill a coyote. there is no device or scent, but that man with the idea to hang them up will not work. the smallest caliber to work on a coyote is a .22/250, but it is very loud and ammo is harder to find. my grandparents are going to be getting a .223, which is big enough to take down a coyote, and it can reach out 250 yards accurately and still kill a coyote.
here is a link for the gun you should get. get it in .223.

good luck, and don't worry about shooting them no one can get you in trouble. and if anyone asks, if you have a pet you can say you are protecting your pets i know people who have told the game commission that and they go away with it.

live in western PA, and damn proud of it <((((><

Yes because coyotes can't survive with wolves around.that's why there are no coyotes in Canada

Well coyotes are predators and scavengers. They dont kill deer unless it is injured or sick and it is just easier to kill it than pass it by. they do eat dead ones though. A bigger dog will help because they know its not their territory to be on and when that is enfocred they will stay away. Just a joke, but if you like Llamas, a single kick form one will kill a coyote, and ive seen it happen twice. thats why sheep farmers keep them in with sheep and are replacing dogs. Are you sure it isnt open season on coyotes, thats more less all over the US because they are overpopulated and need controlled. I dont know if they make scents like they do for foxes that will keep them away because they know whatever they smell can kill them.

Where I am from, ranchers typically shoot coyotes, and then hang the carcasses up on fenceposts.

The idea is that the living coyotes will see cousin Larry and uncle Bob hanging up there and will run home and tell everyone that this is not such a friendly neighborhood.

Don't know how well it works...

You can use ammonia soaked rags. Just ace them around the property. Most trapper supply shops carry mountain lion and wolf urine. Make sure your dogs are spayed and/or neutered. Don't leave food or water out. Also, if you come across one, give it a shot of bear spray. The bear spray has CS as well as ammonia and usually foams to penetrate the fur. This will offer negative reinforcement.

I reckon you live out West, right?
Well, I live in the Southeast, and those dad-blasted things are all the way out here now! Here, it's open season all year round for coyotes.
THERE IS ONE THING YOU CAN DO. Get a mule. Mules kill coyotes. It's true. Wait...you'd need a fence for that.
Buddy, I think you'll just have to shoot 'em.

Get some scent of a mountain lion and sprinkle around. Check with a sporting goods store on "how to" get this. Coyotes avoid mountain lions like politicians avoid honesty.

Unless you want to shoot them start digging a grave for your dog, that is unless the coyotes drag it off and eat it out in the woods like they did a dog near here...
